Get to know Stephanie
Why did you decide to become a counselor?
In High School, I came across a major in Art Therapy. At the time, my debate was art vs. "helping people" and that major was the best of both worlds. After college, I got a job as a counselor in a substance abuse residential program and found out I'm pretty good at it!
What types of clients do you work with best?
People who are willing to consider some less common strategies, like humor, and mindfulness, and committing to really good self-care. I'll ask you to think AND feel, look at your issues AND pay attention to the good stuff in your life.
What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?
That you SO aren't alone. And I can't read your mind. OK, that's two things but both are true!
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
Thriveworks offered a chance to work with my clients rather than using my time on administrative tasks.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
Clients might be surprised about the extent of background information they are asked for during the first session. This helps me get a more rounded view of you and your issues.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I want to balance getting to know you with the administrative stuff (informed consent and perhaps billing information) with finding out what your life has been like and what you need right now. I will want to know: What you want to accomplish by the time we are done with therapy?
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I'm an artist. I live on the side of a small mountain and appreciate nature and the animals around my house. I have really big dogs. I like to go see things and spend time with small groups of people. I'm a voracious reader.
