Hear from our clinicians

What is your go-to approach for anxiety therapy?

Kacie: My go-to approach for treating anxiety is use of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I prefer/enjoy/find the best benefit in exploring the client’s anxiety because it provides more context and information to the client to navigate future anxious situations differently and with a little more empowerment. This includes identification of sources, triggers, thoughts, emotions, and behaviors associated with anxiety.

Tawnie: I prefer CBT and solution-focused brief counseling because I believe how you choose to react in any situation is directly linked to your thoughts and schema at the current time. I lean heavily on helping you find realistic and usable solutions to your problems, and my goal in treating you would be to help you fill your toolbox with a variety of coping and proactive skills so that you can use them when you need to.

What tools do you teach in anxiety therapy?

Kacie: I teach the following tools when working with anxiety:

  • Identifying, understanding, and accepting emotions in general
  • Identifying triggers and symptoms of anxiety
  • Challenging negative thoughts and creating alternate thoughts
  • Identifying current coping strategies (typically unhealthy ones) and finding new coping strategies to reduce anxiety in different situations
  • Mindfulness practices – creating more awareness and intentionality
  • Self-compassion/acceptance – ways to compliment oneself and appreciate the differences that we all have.
  • Identifying opportunities to engage in more self-compassion/self-care practices

Tawnie: When feeling anxious, I would encourage you to pause and use critical thinking skills to really explore why you are feeling anxious and try to identify what might be causing you to have anxiety at the time—for example, is it based on a fear that you might have? And if it is, what ways can you overcome that fear so that you can feel less fearful and anxious if placed in the same situation the next time?

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy?

Kacie: I know a client is making meaningful progress changing their patterns with anxiety when they are able to utilize tools that they have learned in therapy in their day-to-day life and feel an associated relief since the onset of treatment. Additionally, evidence of progress occurs when when clients consistently report less anxiety between sessions and are able to identify changes in their approach of handling previous situations that were anxiety-producing.

Tawnie: I know a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy when they are able to identify what is triggering their anxious thoughts and use coping tools learned in counseling such as challenging their negative thoughts, using thought reframing, or deep breathing to calm themselves down and choose a proactive and positive approach to manage their feelings of anxiety.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement anxiety therapy?

Kacie: Clients can supplement their time in individual therapy and attending to their anxiety through mindfulness practices, self-awareness, journaling, meditation, exercise, socialization, reading, podcasts, and other self-affirming practices.

Tawnie: I encourage you to engage in activities that help you feel good about yourself! It can be calling up a friend whom you haven't spoken to in a while, learning a new hobby or learning how to play a new musical instrument, and definitely surrounding yourself with people who make you feel good and laugh...try to laugh a lot as often as you can!

What should someone do to prepare for starting anxiety therapy?

Kacie: To prepare for your first individual therapy session for anxiety, I encourage you to know you are already taking the first steps toward making change in your life! Know that your clinician wants to support you and assist you in making changes that will reduce your anxiety so that you are able to feel more confident, empowered, and grounded in your day-to-day life. Thank you for taking these steps for yourself and for seeking help in making change!

Tawnie: I would encourage you to be open and honest with your counselor about your feelings of anxiety and be prepared to examine the origins behind those anxious thoughts and feelings.

Starting Anxiety therapy

What is anxiety therapy?

Anxiety therapy helps people better understand and manage their anxiety. Anxiety therapists at Thriveworks in The Woodlands, TX can develop a treatment plan that will help you better manage your day-to-day anxiety or your anxiety disorder.

How does anxiety therapy work?

Anxiety therapy involves talking to a therapist about symptoms, potential causes, and more. Thriveworks The Woodlands therapists will then work with you to determine where your anxiety might stem from and teach you effective coping mechanisms.

How to deal with anxiety?

One of the best ways to deal with anxiety is to learn about your own anxiety: your symptoms, what triggers it, and what coping mechanisms have been effective in the past. When you learn what your anxiety is tied to, it can help you be mindful of what’s really happening as well as prevent and mitigate symptoms by processing and working through the issue in therapy. Other strategies that have been shown to help manage anxiety are meditation, challenging anxious thoughts, exercising, and journaling.

Symptoms of anxiety

Common symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Sense of impending danger
  • Nervousness/restlessness
  • Trouble focusing
  • Excessive sweating
  • Shaking
  • Headaches
  • Stomach issues
  • Fatigue
  • Panic attacks
  • Increased heart rate

What is the best therapy for anxiety?

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can be incredibly effective in treating anxiety and anxiety disorders. Other effective techniques include exposure therapy, Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and EMDR therapy.

Is anxiety therapy conducted in person or online?

Anxiety therapy is conducted both in person and online, depending on the individual’s preferences and their therapist’s availability. We suggest choosing the option that best suits your needs.

How long does anxiety therapy last?

On average, people can tend to attend 15 to 20 session of anxiety therapy (five or more months). However, this number is heavily dependent on the type of anxiety that’s being treated and its severity, with many choosing to attend anxiety therapy for a longer period of time to ensure its effectiveness long-term.

Is therapy worth it for anxiety?

Yes, it is worth going to therapy for anxiety. If you are struggling with regular anxious thoughts and feelings that are affecting your day-to-day life or you suspect that you have an anxiety disorder, you should seek expert anxiety help.

Anxiety Disorders – Symptoms and Causes

Sometimes it is easy to pinpoint why we may experience excessive anxiety while other times it feels random. Different causes and risk factors for anxiety disorders include genetics, environmental factors, medical conditions, behavioral choices, work environments, demographics, and more. Regardless of the type of anxiety disorder you have, there are also common denominator symptoms, which are:

  • Excessive or uncontrollable worry
  • Nausea
  • Racing thoughts
  • Trembling
  • Impending doom or dread
  • Lack of focus
  • Irritability
  • Fatigue
  • Excessive sweating

At Thriveworks The Woodlands Counseling, we can not only help you not only learn how to identify stressors but can help you manage symptoms before they arise.

What Are Anxiety Disorders?

There are many different anxiety disorders that can be split up into three different categories: anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and trauma and stressor-related disorders. Here are some of the more common anxiety disorders:

  1. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): This disorder is characterized by excessive, uncontrollable worry or fear over different events and activities. This disorder can interfere with someone’s work, school, and personal lives.
  2. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): PTSD is brought on by a specific traumatic event or experience that caused a great deal of stress. This can include death, car accidents, combat, assaults, and more.
  3. Panic Disorder: This is when someone experiences sudden feelings of panic, generally out of the blue, which includes extreme worry and fear. Some say that panic attacks feel like heart attacks.
  4. Specific Phobia: Specific phobia is an anxiety disorder that stems from an irrational fear. For example, some people have specific phobias over animal types, storms, heights, airplanes, enclosed spaces, loud noises, or receiving a shot.

There are many other types of anxiety disorders that you could be experiencing. The most important thing to do is to see a counselor who can diagnose, treat, and help you manage what you are facing. Luckily, Thriveworks The Woodlands therapists can help you do all three.

My therapist, Catherine has really helped me over the last few months, so much that my friends and family have noticed. After each session, I find a new way/skill to use when communicating with the narcissists in my life. I still have a ways to go, letting go of guilt, not reacting, but I am confident I will get there.
