Starting Codependency therapy

What is codependency therapy?

Codependency therapy with our Thriveworks Silver Spring therapists helps people reduce and overcome codependent habits, which involve sacrificing one’s own needs to meet the needs of others (usually those closest to them). It helps to improve one’s well-being as well as the health of their relationships.

How does codependency therapy work?

Codependency therapy works by helping the individual recognize, understand, and accept codependent patterns — including why and how they might’ve developed. In addition, it focuses on helping the individual to kick these tendencies and build more balanced relationships that allow them to support others without neglecting their own needs.

Is codependency therapy conducted in person or online?

Codependency therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does codependency therapy last?

Codependent counseling can last for a few weeks, months, or longer. It depends on the exact needs of the client as well as the severity of their codependent challenges and other needs or preferences.

Need more help deciding?

If you believe that you or someone close to you might benefit from counseling for codependency or dependent personality disorder therapy, it is best to know what symptoms are associated with these conditions, and what type of help is out there.

The Most Common Signs to Be Aware of

Codependency is when the level of dependence you have with your significant other or the other person in your life becomes so unhealthy that it causes problems in other areas of your life:

The following may be signs of codependency:

  • Does the sufferer show very low levels of self-worth and self-esteem?
  • Do the people in the relationship show an intense level of dependence upon each other?
  • Does the sufferer seem to require the other person in their relationship to feel as though they are dependent upon them?
  • Does the sufferer blame the other person to an unhealthy and unfair degree when things go wrong in their life?
  • Does the sufferer’s entire existence depend upon this other person to an unhealthy and unnatural level?

Codependency Therapy Types

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT):Helps individuals identify and challenge maladaptive thought patterns and behaviors associated with codependency, fostering healthier boundaries and self-esteem.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT):Integrates mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness skills to address emotional dysregulation and improve relationships.
  • Schema Therapy:Targets deep-rooted patterns and beliefs developed in childhood that contribute to codependent behaviors, promoting emotional healing and healthy relationship dynamics.
  • Inner Child Work:Focuses on healing unresolved childhood wounds and traumas that contribute to codependent patterns, fostering self-compassion and self-awareness.
  • Family Systems Therapy:Involves the individual’s family members in the therapeutic process to address dysfunctional family dynamics and promote healthier relationship patterns.
  • Group Therapy:Provides a supportive environment for individuals to connect with others who share similar experiences, share insights, and receive validation and feedback.

Moving Forward with a Far Healthier Mindset

There are options out there for help with professional psychologists. Professionals can help you or someone you know to move forward in life with a healthier mindset and healthier relationships thanks to counseling for codependency or dependent personality disorder therapy.
