Starting Infidelity counseling

What is Infidelity counseling?

Infidelity counseling is a specialized therapeutic approach designed for couples grappling with the aftermath of one or more partner’s infidelity. It offers a nurturing and non-judgmental environment where both individuals can delve into the underlying reasons behind the breach of trust, openly express their feelings, and collaboratively strive to mend their relationship. The overarching objective of infidelity counseling is to either facilitate a path to reconciliation, should both partners desire it, or guide them through the process of separation or divorce with clarity and empathy.

How does Infidelity counseling work?

Infidelity counseling combines various therapeutic techniques, such as individual and couples therapy, cognitive-behavioral approaches for changing destructive thought patterns, communication skills training for conflict resolution, Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) to rebuild trust, narrative therapy to reframe relationship narratives, and mindfulness practices for managing intense emotions. These methods work together to foster self-awareness, emotional healing, and the reconstruction of trust, leading to a healthier, more resilient relationship.

Is Infidelity counseling conducted in person or online?

Infidelity counseling at Thriveworks Silver Spring, MD is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does Infidelity counseling last?

The number of sessions needed for infidelity counseling can greatly vary based on the specific needs of the individuals or couples involved and the complexity of the issues being addressed. Thriveworks infidelity counseling in Silver Spring, MD typically includes multiple sessions spanning from several weeks to several months, with the exact number of sessions decided in consultation with the therapist, considering the progress made during therapy and the therapeutic goals.

Need more help deciding?

The worst thing about adultery and infidelity is the feeling of betrayal that follows. The thought that one half of that couple felt that they had to seek something elsewhere with someone else can feel like the worst betrayal in the world, especially after all the good times between them. So, what goes wrong and pushes the couple to seek counseling for adultery?

According to counselors for infidelity, there are a number of factors that cause adultery or a partner in a marriage or relationship to become unfaithful. These causes can be any one (or a combination) of the following:

  • Lack of communication in a partnership
  • Feelings of neglect in a partnership
  • Boredom
  • Jealousy
  • Feeling misunderstood
  • Feeling unwanted and unattractive
  • General dissatisfaction with the partnership.

Adultery often occurs during critical points in a relationship, such as after moving in together or having a child. What should be a happy time for the partnership can sometimes turn into panic for one person in it and they need to “escape” if only for a short time.

There are two sides to every story.  At Thriveworks Silver Spring, our adultery counselors in Montgomery County work to bring the two sides to the table and work out an effective solution.  They see both sides equally and want to resolve the issues at hand in order to restore a happy and healthy relationship.

How Does Adultery Affect People?

Adultery hurts. Betrayal hurts. The person who has been betrayed has their trust in everyone absolutely shattered. The person who did the betraying feels guilt for what they’ve done but also feels that maybe they’ll never be forgiven no matter how much they make amends.  This betrayal can lead to the following effects:

  • Feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt
  • Lack of trust in the partner and others
  • Humiliation
  • Rage

The gap between the betrayed and the betrayer can seem unfathomable and that is what counseling for infidelity is for—to help to bridge that gap.  Learning how to overcome the hatred and hurt that accompanies infidelity in a relationship can be extremely crucial in moving forward in not only your marriage, but in life as well.

Counseling for Infidelity

After an earth-shattering event like infidelity hitting a relationship, professional counseling for adultery is recommended. A counselor can help with the following:

  • Determining whether the relationship is even worth saving or if a constructive, amicable split is in order
  • Helping both parties decide if they should stay together
  • Setting forth a process of recovery for both parties
  • Mediating between both parties to determine what each person wants.

A counselor working with a couple that truly want to make things right is one of the best tools to utilize in order to achieve that goal. It’s difficult but a great many marriages and relationships do survive infidelity.

Through both individual and couples counseling, the professional can bring the damaged relationship into the sunlight and work to make it complete again.  Counseling for infidelity is not easy, but it is worth it if you stick with it.  If you are thinking that infidelity counseling could be beneficial for your relationship, please contact us for more information and we will be happy to help.

A'Lisa made the whole required process of alcohol treatment not seem so bad. I should not have had to do it. But her approach to teaching the group made me actually look forward to coming. Her lessons could be applied as whole life lessons, not just in reference to recovery. I was actually so satisfied with her that I began individual sessions with her after program completion. Thanks so much for this experience.
