What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

My go-to approach for helping people in online therapy is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). I usually start my sessions with a check-in to see how the week was, including the highs and lows, which usually dovetails into discussing what we need to in the session. I find the best benefit with CBT because it helps connect thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Additionally, by being more attuned to negative thinking patterns, you can start to challenge them over time and reduce symptoms.

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

In depression counseling, I teach the following tools:

  • Cognitive restructuring: Challenging negative thinking patterns and putting them to the test to create space for a more balanced way of thinking.
  • Behavioral activation: Creating a schedule to assist with motivation while monitoring mood and pleasure levels.
  • Coping skills identification.
  • Problem-solving skills.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling when they report symptom reduction and an increase in positive mood.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement depression counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in depression counseling with:

  • Finding additional activities they can get involved with.
  • Problem-solving to reduce overall symptoms.
  • Increasing their social supports.

What should someone do to prepare for starting depression counseling?

To prepare for your first therapy session, you can think about what you wish to accomplish in treatment and set your goals. The first few sessions are more about information gathering and goal setting to figure out where you want to go in and out of treatment.

What Is It Like to Be Depressed? Common Depression Symptoms

Depression is known for its undying despair. Those who enter a depressed state also experience a loss of interest in day to day activities, from going to work to talking to loved ones. Aside from these two staples, depression can vary greatly from one individual to the next. That said, here are common symptoms, of which victims of depression are likely to experience:

  1. Feelings of hopelessness: Common among people with depression are feelings of hopelessness. This pairs dangerously well with one’s loss or lack of interest in life.
  2. Sleep disturbances: It is also common for people with depression to experience sleep disturbances, such as insomnia and hypersomnia.
  3. Fatigue: Additionally, one might feel fatigued or depleted of all energy—even those who aren’t struggling to sleep at night. A depressed individual can sleep for 12 hours and still feel exhausted.
  4. Irritability: Also common among those with depression is irritability. The depressed individual might feel irritable or encounter mood swings on a daily basis.
  5. Lack of concentration: It’s also often difficult for people with depression to focus on anything outside of their depressive thoughts. This makes keeping a job difficult.

These are just a few symptoms of depression. One might also experience restlessness, weight gain or loss, changes in appetite, apathy, anxiety and agitation. The specifics often make a difference when it comes to receiving help for depression. All of the symptoms we have so far mentioned are harmful and need to be managed properly, in order to keep one’s health and happiness intact.

This is one of their many important jobs, in guiding you and supporting you during this tough time in your life.
