Starting Grief counseling

What is Grief counseling?

Grief counseling helps people grieve difficult losses including the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, or the end of a relationship. It helps people navigate their grief process and eventually accept, understand, and move forward from their loss. Grief counselors have specific experience, training, and skills that enable them to best-support grieving individuals.

How does Grief counseling work?

Grief counseling isn't one-size-fits-all, but it involves sharing about your loss and then working with your counselor to acknowledge and accept your new reality in its wake. Your Thriveworks grief counselor will design your treatment plan around your unique needs and goals for therapy, applying the counseling techniques that best support them. It may take place as individual-counseling or a form of group therapy such as Family therapy.

Is Grief counseling conducted in person or online?

Grief counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does Grief counseling last?

For many, grief counseling lasts for about 6 months. For others, it may last shorter or longer, depending on the severity of their loss and their grief.

Need more help deciding?

The loss of someone or something can be devastating.  It’s estimated that an average of 2.5 million people die annually.  Each passing leaves as many as five grieving people behind.  Approximately 1.5 million children in America have lost one or both of their biological parents.  Whether it’s the death of a loved one or the loss of something else, such as a career, a home, or a dream, anyone can experience grief.

Our careers are much more than just the way we earn an income. Our jobs often define how we view ourselves – and how others see us.  The loss of a job can create stress, self-esteem issues, depression, and (of course) grief.  Grief associated from job loss can extend into the next job, too.

Friends and family try to be helpful.  They mean well.  They say things like, “You’ll get over this,” “You’re just going through a rough patch,” or “Time heals all wounds.”

– But what if time doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do?

What Is Grief?

Grief is a natural response to a loss.  It’s important to recognize that “loss” can’t be isolated to a category or type of event.  Loss is experienced differently from person-to-person.  How we handle it, the time needed to work through it, and the type of support needed varies.

Grief can be powerful, leaving people feeling like they’re on an emotional roller coaster.  And although they’d like to exit the ride, they just can’t seem to make it stop long enough to get off.  Many people report feeling like they’re trapped in a vicious cycle, one they don’t know how to break, with seemingly no light at the end of the tunnel.  At times like these, the support of a trusted friend, loved one, or grief counselor can someone who’s dealing with grief or loss find hope.  (803) 368-6499.

How Does Grief Counseling Work?

In the same way that everyone experiences grief differently, people also heal from grief differently.  For some, the process is relatively brief. For others, it takes time to work through their grief.  Grief therapy is a process of recovering from a loss.  This recovery may have many sensitive pieces to sort through.  A licensed grief therapist can help you understand this new normal in your life help you work toward a higher level of understanding and acceptance.

Do I Need a Grief Counselor?

Many people have benefited from working with a Grief Counselor.  You may find that grief therapy can help you get back to living life after a death, tragedy, or loss of any kind.  You may benefit from grief counseling if you experience any of the following issues:

  • Panic attacks
  • Thoughts of hopelessness
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Loss of interest in routine tasks
  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Over-sleeping/difficulty getting out of bed
  • Uncontrollable crying
  • Increased worry
  • You’ve experienced multiple losses in a brief time
  • Withdrawal from social interaction
  • Increased alcohol or drug use
