Alison Borden, LPC

The path I took to work as a counselor at Thriveworks is a rather straightforward one. I have had an interest in helping others with feelings or emotions since as far back as I can remember. When family or teachers would notice this interest, they would tell me that I may want to look into psychology.  It wasn’t until high school when I was able to take a class in the subject. What I learned in that class ignited my interest in the field and so I chose my major before even applying to colleges. Before graduating from Chestnut Hill College with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, I had already enrolled in LaSalle’s master’s in professional counseling psychology program. Since graduating in 2012, I have provided treatment to a variety of populations in the city of Philadelphia.

I specialize in cognitive behavioral therapy and family therapy with a focus on communication. I have worked with children, adolescents, and adults, in the home, school, and office setting. I have extensive experience working with people with autism and Asperger’s syndrome. I highly enjoy working with people who are experiencing anxiety and depression and trauma-informed care is paramount to my practice. I am an LGBTQIA+ friendly counselor and welcome the opportunity to be an agent of change and healing to any interested client.

Dr. Allena Moncrief

Greetings, my name is Dr. Allena M. Moncrief and I have been providing therapeutic services to clients in the Philadelphia area since 2010.  I obtained my PhD from Drexel University in the field of Couple and Family Therapy in 2017.  As a psychotherapist, I understand the decision to enter psychotherapy can be extremely challenging for some individuals.  Thus, I strive to meet individuals where they are in the therapeutic process.   This process involves helping individuals explore the root of their difficulties/road blocks and assisting them with creating a roadmap that will lead to a more fulfilling and enjoyable life.  I am a trauma- informed therapist with specialization in the areas of: self-esteem, marital and familial conflict, sexual abuse, transgenerational trauma, divorce, adolescent challenges, and parenting.  I offer services to adults, adolescents, couples, and families.  As an African American woman, I have a grave understanding of the trials and tribulations individuals of color face in today's society.  I believe race, ethnicity, culture, and social economical factors play a pivotal role in how individuals live their daily lives and I invite discussion of such factors in the therapeutic process.

My counseling style is to take on a holistic and eclectic approach. I’m a firm believer that it is important to meet clients where they are at and to be culturally sensitive. I take great pride in assuring my clients that this is a safe place where they can vent, express themselves, feel validated, and not be judged. I believe in taking on a positive approach and focusing on the client’s strength to give them a since of empowerment and encouragement. My therapeutic style is flexible and it’s not a one size fits all. I approach each family, couple, or individual with warmth, compassion, respect, and openness while working together to collaboratively to help with meeting target goals.

I have worked with individuals, families, children, and adults coping with a variety of issues including ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), autism, oppositional defiant disorder, depression, attachment disorders, personality disorders, parental conflicts, anxiety, trauma, abuse, struggle with adjustment, struggle with coping with caring for a special needs child, and a wide range of problems.

Until we learn to feel, to acknowledge, to cope and start the healing of our unresolved pain and struggles, we remain stagnant in discovering the best versions of ourselves.  There is strength in making the choice to seek out help, to start the healing process, and you deserve it. I am open and ready to help.

In this day and age it is so hard to be seen and heard, to know if we are “normal” and “fit in with society.”  If you are having issues navigating troubled thoughts, unmotivated to reach your goals, concerns with substance abuse, or relationship/ marriage problems, I would love the opportunity to work with you.  I meet clients where they are and identify what concerns have brought you to therapy. We come up with a plan together to help you reach your goals in therapy. I have experience working with individual clients, couples, adolescents and young children. I use multiple interventions and identify those specifically to meet each clients needs.

A little about myself, my education concentrated on counseling and I earned a Masters in Social work and Education in Human Sexuality.  Where I focused on identified sexual functioning issues, and working with relationship problems with couples primarily concentrating on sexual concerns. In addition my education focused on working with the LGBTQIA populations.   I worked extensively with clients who have experienced trauma, PTSD, parenting and issues with children. I have experience running women’s groups, sex education, early recovery, and couples groups. My theoretical orientation is psycho dynamic, ego psych, family systems therapy.  I use interventions such as CBT, DBT, motivational interviewing, trauma informed and strength based. I currently hold my LCSW in the state of PA and have been working and living with my family in the Center City area since 2015.

First, let me assure you that reaching out for help is one of the most courageous and insight-driven steps that any person can take in their life, despite how fearful and confusing it may seem; I admire you for making it this far.

My name is TJ McDowell and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor practicing both online and in-person in the state of Pennsylvania. I have worked in behavioral and mental health now for over 8 years in a variety of settings and different roles, with the last several years of experience focused mainly in individual therapy. I have developed proficiency in theories including Existential & Person-Centered counseling as well as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques and an expertise in Motivational Interviewing.

I believe in the human heart's and mind's abilities to heal themselves through meaningful, reflective, and validating conversation; though I also understand there is a time to pick up a pen and do the realistic work of setting goals and solving practical problems. It is my experience that most satisfying counseling experiences are typically a dynamic blend of both of these styles of approach. In our working relationship, you will have the freedom to guide and decide what's best for you.

Let me offer a quick glimpse into what inspires me:

As someone who does not ascribe to a particular faith, many are surprised to hear that my credentials come from a Pastoral Care and Counseling degree. I am personally and professionally fascinated by the ways that we as humans integrate into our lives that which is most precious and meaningful. Regardless of affiliation with a religious faith or a total lack thereof, I believe that as humans it is an essential part of our growth and personal fulfillment to embrace those things which some may call "spiritual." For example- my bachelor's degree is in Physics, and a deep reverence for the natural world and universe is something I carry with me in daily life. In this sense, when I look at pictures of Saturn and its rings & moons that I took with a telescope back then, I am filled with a sense of wonder and connection to something bigger than myself.

Let me just reiterate how impressive it is that you have made it this far. Counseling can be brief and solution focused, longer and more existential & creative, or a place to go when you don't know what you want but you just have a vague sense that something about life isn't right. I have worked with many people in all of these stages of searching for help, and I am confident that I can be of service to you in your journey and look forward to getting to know you.

Abraham Kou, LPC, CAADC

Hi there, my name is Abraham Kou. I completed a master's degree in Professional Counseling from the University of Pennsylvania and I'm currently a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Pennsylvania Board Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CAADC) who provides therapy to individual adults.

My areas of specialization are: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD), substance use problems, social anxiety, grief and loss, self-harm, and Bipolar and Related Disorders. Most of my past professional experience has been with adults in residential drug and alcohol treatment, outpatient/intensive outpatient methadone maintenance therapy, and remote crisis counseling.

In regards to my approach, I think that therapy is about building a safe relationship and meeting you where you're at. When we sit down together, it's really whatever you want to make it. For some people it's a structured type of therapy. Others might free flow and talk about what's on their mind. Maybe it's some combination of both. There's no wrong way to do therapy. Wherever we land, meetings are very conversational and I ask plenty of questions to help examine what role trauma may have had in developing presenting challenges. I also highlight how early and current relationships shape the ways that we experience the world using attachment theory.

Overall, I believe that building self-awareness into our past and present helps us change our future behavior. In doing this, I draw from multiple approaches to help offer relief, though I tend to incorporate a lot of mindfulness-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in our time together.
