Anorexia and Bulimia Disorder Therapy – Counselors in Littleton

According to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, around 30 million people in the US suffer from anorexia and bulimia, two life threatening and even potentially fatal disorders. However, the same association places the number of sufferers who have access to proper treatment at only 10 percent.

What makes this more of a tragedy is that anorexia and bulimia are both curable and preventable, and that those who suffer them but go about the wrong way of treating them often end up worse than before.

The Reasons People Experience Anorexia and Bulimia

What are the causes of anorexia and bulimia? People have always thought the reasons behind them were only low self-esteem and obsession over the body image. However, studies show these reasons to be even more complex than that.

  • Genetics can be a reason for these disorders. If one or more than one member of your family suffers from them you are 12 times likely to also develop them. Genes can also affect how you see food.
  • Mental health issues can contribute to anorexia or bulimia risks. A classic symptom of depression is total obsession with or complete revulsion of food. However, it should also be mentioned that patients can have depressive symptom not related to eating disorders at all.
  • Eating disorders can also be caused by traumatic experiences. This includes those involving not just physical, emotional, or sexual abuse; even experiences that caused guilt, shame, or tore down confidence can also be blamed.
  • Easy availability of products like diet pills and weight-loss pills can also lead to eating disorders.
  • Anorexia and bulimia may also be caused by environmental influences such as peer pressure.

Symptoms of Eating Disorders

  • Depression and anxiety
  • Fixation over how he/she or others view his/her body image
  • Episodes of binge eating followed by purging
  • Totally avoiding having to eat
  • Sticking to a highly restrictive diet designed to cause weight loss (which leads to loss of essential nutrients instead)
  • Obsession over one’s weight
  • Feeling guilt or shame after eating

Challenges and How to Get Bulimia Therapy

Don’t underestimate the ill effects of eating disorders; they have a way of becoming problems when you least expect them to. Diseases like stroke, cardiovascular disease, and hypertension are only some of the illnesses you risk if you don’t get enough nutrients. Even the simple act of purging constitutes danger as you can choke on your own vomit.

Those suffering from eating disorders also tend to enter a non-ending cycle of guilt, shame, and depression, with many viewing suicide as the only way out. Struggling against eating disorders can be tough if you think you have no one to help you, but this isn’t necessarily true. If you are in Littleton and you have eating disorders there are people who can help you.

It’s up to you to take that first step in fighting the problem. Get in touch with us. We have counselors who can provide you with the professional, emotional, and reliable support you need to get through your problem.
