What is your go-to approach for teen counseling?

Taylor: Providing therapy to teenagers is one of my favorite populations to work with. While working with them, I enjoy using acceptance and commitment therapy, attachment theory, and a family systems approach.

Bethany: My go-to approach for helping teens in counseling is finding a commonality. It's hard to talk about hard things with someone you feel like you can't relate to. I find it best to build a safe environment because if you don't connect with the person who is trying to help you with personal issues, you don't get the optimal benefit of therapy.

What tools do you teach in teen counseling?

Taylor: Teenagers often do not feel understood and heard, therefore building the therapeutic alliance is key. I enjoy teaching teens that they are important and helping them build their confidence. Helping them understand what a healthy relationship looks like and learn communication skills can provide them with beneficial life-long tools.

Bethany: In teen counseling, I review the following tools:

  • Coping skills
  • Core mindfulness
  • How to identify primary and secondary emotions
  • Communication skills

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in teen counseling?

Taylor: Teenagers can show progress when they start setting boundaries, communicating with parents and friends better, advocating for their own wants and needs, and having more confidence in themselves.

Bethany: I know that a client is making progress in teen counseling when they come to therapy and are willing to openly discuss various topics, whether it's how their day went, a past trauma event, or a new hobby they learned. When a teen begins to get comfortable talking about these things, they are better equipped to begin using their supports (parents, siblings, teachers, etc.) and effectively gain support with what they are going through from people they trust.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement teen counseling?

Taylor: In between sessions, teens can spend time evaluating their relationships, identifying what makes them happy, spending time taking care of themselves, and learning who they are/who they want to be and what they want to see change.

Bethany: Clients can supplement their time in teen counseling by using their natural supports, building mastery in hobbies they enjoy, learning something new, or working on a goal that is specific to them. This can be hard to do without knowing where to start. Counseling is a great way to help an adolescent learn where to begin.

What should someone do to prepare for starting teen counseling?

Taylor: There isn't anything that you need to do to prepare for our first session. As long as you show up we can discuss what therapy is going to look like and what you want out of it.

Bethany: To prepare for their first teen counseling session, a teen can identify some of the goals or reasons for beginning therapy. If a teen is nervous about their first session, it can be helpful to go through their counselor's bio with them so they know who they will be meeting with. A first session is pretty heavily focused on getting to know one another, and if they have a concept of what their counselor is like, this may ease some pre-appointment nerves.

Starting Teen counseling

What is teen counseling?

Teen counseling helps young individuals better understand and manage the challenges that affect their mental health. Common challenges amongst teens include anxiety, depression, ADHD, and problematic relationships with food.

How does teen counseling work?

Teen counseling works by using multiple techniques, tailored to fit the teen’s unique needs — based on their age group, their challenges, and the severity of their challenges. It might involve cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, art therapy, and others for varying ages. In any case, Thriveworks teen therapists in Grand Rapids Charter Township have the expertise and experience to help young individuals at their level.

Does my teen need therapy?

Signs that teens might need Teen counseling can be very subjective, as they are experiencing many changes and can have intense reactions to them. As parents, you know your child best and are best equipped to judge whether certain reactions are standard behaviors for your teen or whether they might be hinting at a larger problem. Even so, there are a few common signs and events that often point to a need for therapy, such as experiencing divorce or loss, grief, consistent low moods, teens distancing themselves and becoming isolated, losing interest in hobbies, excessive anger or irritability, substance use issues, and suicidal ideation, among others.

Is teen counseling conducted in person or online?

Teen counseling providers at Thriveworks in Grand Rapids Charter Township, MI offer both in person and online therapy by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does teen counseling last?

The length of teen counseling depends on your teen’s needs as well as the goals that you and their therapist might have for them. Generally, teen counseling sessions will last for several months.

I am loving Thriveworks not only for the convenience of virtual appointments, but this is the first place I’ve tried that has actually helped. My therapist is incredibly kind and helpful and is amazing at helping me with any issues I’m struggling with. They paired me with a therapist that is experienced in the specific areas I needed help with, and it has been wonderful. I would absolutely recommend Thriveworks!

I was in need of a psychiatrist for chronic depression and anxiety. I came across thrive having only a 4 month wait instead 9 to 12 month wait with any other psychiatrist. This was wonderful news. I met Denise as my clinician. She is very empathetic very knowledgeable. She has helped me alot sine my first vist. She is very dedicated to her patients which I truly appreciate. I would highly recommend her for any psychiatric needs. I think she goes above and beyond her role. She is a caring individual. There should be more people like Denise. She needs to be recognized for her work.
