Carol Jones-Pinckney is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and Board Approved Supervisor in the state of Maryland. She has over 20 years of experience in the human services field working with various nonprofits but for the last 8 years provided therapy for children, adolescents, adults, families, and couples.
Carol applies a nonjudgmental, caring, strength-based, and integrative approach to therapy. Individualized assessments and treatment plans are key to achieving client goals. Carol maintains that collaboration, trust, and building a partnership are key ingredients to navigate through life’s struggles presented in therapy. Success is measured by how the client’s perception of the therapeutic process and engagement in sessions that work to achieve healthy and successful outcomes.

Denise Carmela Katz is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with 30+ years of clinical experience. My general approach for people in individual therapy is cognitive behavioral therapy. I find it particularly helpful for anxiety and depression because it introduces new perspectives that allow people to get unstuck in their thought patterns.
While it depends on what the goals and focus of therapy are, I teach tools like reframing thoughts, emotional regulation, communication skills, self-care, and mindfulness. I find most everyone can benefit from mindfulness skills so they can calm down and center themselves when life feels overwhelming.
I know a client is making meaningful progress in therapy when they recognize what they are doing differently in day-to-day life and how it is positively affecting them.
Clients can supplement their time in individual therapy with workbooks or reading on a topic. It can be a great way to get more information, another perspective, and even ideas or concerns you want to bring to individual therapy.
To prepare for your first individual therapy session, you can think about your goals for therapy—what you are hoping to work on, what is negatively affecting you, or what would you like to learn about. Also having a notebook just for therapy is helpful for taking notes, and you can write things down to bring to your next session.

The duration of your individual therapy sessions will vary. The decision on the number and frequency of sessions is typically collaboratively determined by the client and therapist.
At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. Thriveworks Counseling & Psychiatry Columbia is located in the Shoppes at Wilde Lake and near the intersection of Lynx Lane and Twin Rivers Road, off Governor Warfield Parkway. It is right by Wilde Lake and just off the campus of Howard Community College and Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center. The office is in a multi-story brick and glass shopping complex with attached grocery store. Enter through the small lobby on the left side of the building to access Suite 285 on the second floor.
