What is your go-to approach for dialectical behavior therapy?

My go-to approach for helping clients needing DBT is to provide a comfortable, supportive environment upon which a strong clinical relationship can be built. It is my belief that through this partnership, clients are best able to draw on their individual strengths and capabilities.

What tools do you teach in dialectical behavior therapy?

A variety of tools, techniques, and resources are shared with clients receiving DBT. An example of a tool I would be using is a workbook that addresses cycling in/out problems that impact their mental health.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in dialectical behavior therapy?

I know my clients are making meaningful progress in DBT because they share how they have been making improvements in areas they addressed as presenting problems during their intake.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement dialectical behavior therapy?

DBT clients can supplement their time in therapy by completing therapeutic homework, identifying support systems and using them, and ruling out any medical symptoms and/or diagnoses that may contribute to mental health.

What should someone do to prepare for starting dialectical behavior therapy?

I recommend contacting your insurance company to make sure you understand your mental health benefits before our intake. During your intake, we will be going over a variety of questions so I can get a snapshot picture of your biological, psychological, and social factors, and then briefly go over what brings you in for therapy. This is also a good time to share your mental health goals with me. This information will help me identify if I am a good fit for you and if I am not, I can refer you to someone who can meet your mental health needs.

Starting Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)

What is dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)?

At Thriveworks, Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) primarily concentrates on assisting individuals in emotion regulation, enhancing interpersonal relationships, and acquiring effective coping strategies for managing stress and emotional difficulties.

How does DBT work?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) targets your personal challenges. You may work with your DBT therapist to maintain diary cards to monitor progress, emphasizing validation and support in the therapeutic relationship. DBT follows a stage-based approach, prioritizing crisis reduction initially and life satisfaction.

What is DBT best used for?

DBT was initially developed to address the needs of individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, its versatile approach has enabled its application to a wide range of mental health conditions, including but not limited to, anxiety, depression, stress, and anger issues.

What are the 4 pillars of DBT?

The 4 pillars of DBT are mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance.

Is DBT better than EMDR?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) have distinct purposes and aren’t inherently superior or inferior to one another. DBT is most effective for managing emotional regulation, personality disorders, and interpersonal challenges, while EMDR is specifically tailored for individuals with trauma-related conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Is DBT conducted in person or online?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) with therapists at Thriveworks in Chesterfield, VA is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How many months is DBT?

The duration of a standard DBT program is typically around 24 weeks, which is roughly six months. The actual number of sessions will vary depending on the issues you wish to address.

I was so nervous about going to therapy being that I’ve never foresaw a reason or need to go… I had encountered a very traumatic accident at work and it left me confused and depressed about my career path! I can honestly say if it weren’t for Ariane I’d still be left battling confusion and and depression from my accident. I’ve suffered anxiety and panic attacks from the incident but Ari has given me helpful tips to get through my tough times when I’m experiencing those attacks. I’m just so grateful to have encountered a very experienced and understanding counselor who genuinely has my best interest at a full recovery at heart!

This was my first therapy experience. I was in desperate need for help. Jenee was my therapist for a year and I can’t overstate how incredibly helpful she has been. She met me where I was mentally and helped me to find myself and healthy/productive ways of dealing with my everyday struggles. I’m a completely different and happier person thanks to her hard work.

Dr. Lottie Ampy is an excellent therapist and psychologist, who has served in the counseling and psychology field for many years. I have had the opportunity to work with her in the community and have seen her skills in action first hand, whether for crisis situations or generalized therapy for individuals or families. She delivers caring, compassionate services and is a clinician/psychologist who can work with you, right where you are. She is an asset to the Thriveworks team. Dr. Ampy renders 5*+ services to all she encounters.
