Starting Grief counseling

What is Grief counseling?

Grief counseling helps people grieve difficult losses including the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, or the end of a relationship. It helps people navigate their grief process and eventually accept, understand, and move forward from their loss. Grief counselors have specific experience, training, and skills that enable them to best-support grieving individuals.

How does Grief counseling work?

Grief counseling isn't one-size-fits-all, but it involves sharing about your loss and then working with your counselor to acknowledge and accept your new reality in its wake. Your Thriveworks grief counselor will design your treatment plan around your unique needs and goals for therapy, applying the counseling techniques that best support them. It may take place as individual-counseling or a form of group therapy such as Family therapy.

Is Grief counseling conducted in person or online?

Grief counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does Grief counseling last?

For many, grief counseling lasts for about 6 months. For others, it may last shorter or longer, depending on the severity of their loss and their grief.

Am I Grieving? What Are Grief Symptoms?

Grief comes in many shapes and sizes. One person’s experience might look completely different from another’s. For example, one might feel sad and remorseful; another might feel angry and confused. In any case, grief and loss often come with painful emotions that we don’t exactly know what to do with. The loss of a loved one can also trigger difficult thoughts and physical reactions, all of which serve as grief symptoms. Here is a list of common grief symptoms:

  • Sadness, anger, regret, guilt, and other painful emotions
  • Trouble focusing at work, at school, or otherwise
  • Difficulty sleeping, such as failing to fall or stay asleep
  • Feeling exhausted, tired, or fatigued
  • Headaches, stomachaches, and other pains
  • Feelings of emptiness and hopelessness
  • Significant changes in appetite or weight

What Is Grief Counseling? Can It Help Me?

Grief counseling, otherwise known as grief therapy, is a form of therapy designed to help people grieve properly and support them during this painful time. If you have lost a close family member, friend, pet, or even job, you might be feeling depressed, lonely, or experiencing other difficult emotions. A Thriveworks grief counselor can help you to understand and process these emotions as well as other grief symptoms, which we touched on above.

Our grief counselors will also work to provide you with tools for coping during this painful season of life. In addition, they can assist you in processing your emotions or opening up to your loved ones about how you might be feeling and what you might need from them.

Cindy Goulding is a very accomplished and experienced therapist. For Cindy, being a mental health professional is a calling not simply a job. She cares deeply about the success of her clients and makes them feel comfortable with her grounded and non-judgmental approach. Cindy is highly compassionate as a person. This is not a skill for her; it's who she is at her core. Her relentless pursuit to understand the experience and perspective of others is unmatched. Most people want a competent therapist they can trust with their most vulnerable fears, stories and relationship struggles. Cindy Goulding is a top notch choice!

It’s difficult to say how someone can impact your life. In a short time Donna has impacted my life and helped me see there is a journey. Although the journey is not clear to me, Donna listens with a compassionate heart and deep intent. She is truly engaged and seeks to help you understand as you tell your story. It is the telling of the story that is more important than the words, a wise person told me. Donna very much wants to hear your story. I’m lucky and grateful to have found her.
