About Christal
Christal Nelson is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) and substance counselor with over 8 years of experience. Before Christal entered the mental health field, she enjoyed a career in EMS and Medical Transport for approximately 15 years. It was the medical field that fostered her passion to assist in the mental health field, and it also geared her empathy towards grief, trauma, and addictions. In addition, it gave Christal an early insight into burnout and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), so during her tenure as a therapist she became certified in eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). As a therapist she is passionate to work with adolescents and adults, to overcome challenges so that they may live more fulfilling lives. Christal specializes in depression, anxiety, trauma, addictions, grief/loss, and bipolar disorders.
Christal completed both her bachelor's degree in Psychology and her Master of Science (MS) in Professional Counseling at Liberty University. She is eclectic in her therapeutic modalities but includes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and motivational interviewing (MI) to guide her clients in the therapeutic process.
Loss is loss, trauma is trauma, and grief is grief. When life is hard, it's hard--but you do not have to go through it alone. Christal is confident that she would be able to support you on your journey to gain new perspectives and techniques that allow you to cope with whatever you may be going through. If you are ready to do the work, schedule an appointment with her today.

"As a first-generation immigrant and woman of melanin, I understand the additional stresses to simply exist and succeed."

Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I decided to become a counselor after EMS/Medical Transport. I knew I was skilled in the medical field but I wanted to help people in another capacity.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I love helping students and college students career plan. When I was in college, I learned there was an element of career planning to counseling. Immediately, I wished I could go back to 17 years old with all the knowledge I now acquired. I love sharing that knowledge with people.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish every client knew that social media is a lie. At some point, eventually, everyone has their own battles to go through.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I chose Thriveworks because I have the opportunity to focus solely on my clients and not on paperwork and the other red tape requirements that often take away from the counseling practice.
What inspires you?
People helping people, in their everyday life.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
The first session is an open, warm, non-judgmental environment in which the client shares what brought them into seeking therapy. Clients can expect a longer than normal therapy session in which we explore demographics and history.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
The goal of the first session is to complete the assessment and to answer questions about my counseling modalities, while introducing myself to the client. Hopefully, by the end of the first session it will prepare us (client and counselor) to create a treatment plan and goals for therapy.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
My office, my sessions, and anything we discuss are always a safe space unless it risks someone's life. I am very open-minded.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I have two Velcro puppies that love to be loved on. I also love family time with my husband, mom, niece and nephew and traveling.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
My role in my family is important to me. Growing up in an immigrant family we depended on each other. So our roles to each other, and now in our new families, are important.
