What is your go-to approach for grief & loss counseling?

A go-to approach in helping people who have lost someone is validating their thoughts/feelings as well as educating clients on the grief cycle. By being able to validate clients, we are strengthening the therapeutic alliance and this helps create a sense of healing and understanding.

What tools do you teach in grief & loss counseling?

Tools that can be helpful in grief and loss counseling are journaling and mindfulness practices.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in grief & loss counseling?

A client is making meaningful progress when they can articulate thoughts, feelings, and emotions as well as identify strategies to lessen the intensity of these factors.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement grief & loss counseling?

In time outside of therapy, clients can engage in skills discussed.

What should someone do to prepare for starting grief & loss counseling?

To prepare for the first session, it can be helpful to have an activity to look forward to after therapy to give yourself space and time to decompress.

Starting Grief counseling

What is Grief counseling?

Grief counseling helps people grieve difficult losses including the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, or the end of a relationship. It helps people navigate their grief process and eventually accept, understand, and move forward from their loss. Grief counselors have specific experience, training, and skills that enable them to best-support grieving individuals.

How does Grief counseling work?

Grief counseling isn't one-size-fits-all, but it involves sharing about your loss and then working with your counselor to acknowledge and accept your new reality in its wake. Your Thriveworks grief counselor will design your treatment plan around your unique needs and goals for therapy, applying the counseling techniques that best support them. It may take place as individual-counseling or a form of group therapy such as Family therapy.

Is Grief counseling conducted in person or online?

Grief counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does Grief counseling last?

For many, grief counseling lasts for about 6 months. For others, it may last shorter or longer, depending on the severity of their loss and their grief.

Need more help deciding?

When a loved one passes, the loss can be life changing and the grief unbearable. While the experience is unique to each individual, a devastating loss can feel like one’s heart has been ripped out of their chest; it can feel like there’s a huge gaping hole in everything they’ve known to be true; it can feel like an emptiness that will never be full again. Grief and loss often comes with a great deal of emotions that are hard to endure, or even understand.

“Grief is not a disorder, a disease, or a sign of weakness. It is an emotional, physical, and spiritual necessity, the price you pay for love. The only cure for grief is to grieve.” –Earl Grollman

Fortunately, there are specialists who understand the ins and outs of grief and dedicate their work to helping people process their loss: grief counselors. Grief counselors know that losing a loved one is painful, but they also know that you can come out on the other side and go on to live a happy life again. They want to show you how.

If you are grieving the loss of a loved one and think you could benefit from working with a grief counselor, reach out to Thriveworks Bensalem. We have grief counselors on staff who are ready to get to work. These individuals are experts in their field; they have the skills, training, and experience you want in a healthcare provider. Not to mention, they truly care about your wellbeing and they want to help improve it. If you are ready to start grief counseling, call Thriveworks Bensalem today at (215) 874-8002. We look forward to working with you!

What Are the Negative Effects of Grief and Loss?

Grieving the loss of a loved one is a normal part of life. That said, when we don’t grieve properly or process the loss we have experienced, we can suffer some negative effects. These include:

  • Panic attacks
  • Lack of focus
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Changes in appetite
  • Fear or confusion
  • Losing track of time
  • Irrational thoughts
  • Depression

The grief counselors at Thriveworks Bensalem can help you through the grieving process to prevent or tackle these negative effects. This will involve discussing the loved one lost as well as how the individual feels about the loss. Emotions might include sadness, anger, numbness, guilt, shame, loneliness, and others. Again, grief is a very individualized experience, which means grief counseling needs to be, too. Which brings us to this process:

How Can Counseling Help Me Work Through Grief?

The grief counselors at Thriveworks Bensalem understand just how unique and personal the experience of grief and loss is. They also know how to guide their clients through the bereavement process, based on their unique experience, their emotions, their needs. Your grief counselor will help you to understand and process all of your feelings related to the loss. They might also help you to imagine the trajectory of your life, now that that individual is gone. This is a huge obstacle for many, and it’s important to discuss in grief counseling.

Here at Thriveworks Bensalem, the grief counselors will also consider your culture and/or religion in understanding how you process the loss of an individual. They will keep this in mind when assessing the impact this loss has had on you, as well as helping you to discover helpful techniques for accepting the loss and moving forward with your life.

Cassie is an exceptional therapist! She was extremely understanding throughout and approached my issues in a way that made me feel heard. Cassie has many skills and helped me with coping strategies to get me through my challenges. I do not know how I would have got to where I am now without her support.

I wasn't sure what to expect from therapy, but Jamie put me at ease right away. She is a generous listener who let me explain my situation and my feelings about it without any kind of judgement. She patiently led me through the difficult path of healing, giving me concrete steps to take to process what happened and to move forward. I would recommend her to anyone, no question.

Jamie walked with me through a very difficult period in parenting a child with a chronic illness. She listens well, is compassionate, and helped me reframe my thinking when I was particularly discouraged and stuck. The fact that she could also integrate faith into our conversations made all the difference. I highly recommend working with Jamie!

First met frank in the mid 80's as he came to Phoenix Arizona as a certified surgical technologist & worked with him there in a level 1 trauma center. It wasn't much after his stay in Phoenix he returned to Philadelphia where he then became Philadelphia fire fighter, and his effort of doing that excelled to peaking position as Captain for the PFD. As a friend of Frank through all his dedication and motivation to higher education , that his commitment & dedication hadn't already been in progress . But as a friend to see what he has done and become to his educate himself to helping people in the community is second to none. But more than anything he's a great person and to have him as my friend all these years seen what he's done to keep helping people in the private sector, bravo frank !
