What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in online therapy is to do my very best to replicate the positive impact that face-to-face therapy can have in a virtual setting. Since the client and clinician can only see the tops of one another in a little box on their screen, I find that maintaining eye contact and being sure to ask many directly related follow-up questions helps to replicate the warmth of an in-person setting on the computer. I find the best benefit of online therapy to be the flexibility it provides for a client to have a session in a situation where they might not be able to do in-person therapy, such as not feeling well, inclement weather, or a situation where transportation is not readily available. Online therapy allows a much wider client base to have access to services they otherwise may never be able to get.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

I teach very similar tools in online therapy as I do with in-person sessions, such as interpersonal conflict resolution (ways to resolve challenges between the client and someone else in their lives, coming to a positive resolution), progressive relaxation (deep breathing techniques, progressive muscle relaxation), cognitive reframing (learning how to see alternative ways of addressing situations, interactions, and other people's opinions and emotions), de-catastrophizing (directly addressing a habit of intrusive and worst-case scenario thoughts that can be overwhelming with a series of logical, fact-based lines of questioning), and many other helpful and productive strategies.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when they first state they are feeling comfortable with speaking virtually. Initially, many clients can feel uncomfortable or apprehensive about speaking to someone on a computer instead of face-to-face in an office setting, so when a client begins to feel comfortable and at ease utilizing a virtual setting, that is typically the first sign that the process is working. Additionally, a client's self-report that they are noticing changes in themselves and their interactions with others, or recognizing they are utilizing positive coping strategies in the moment, can be another huge sign that meaningful progress is being made.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in online therapy by journaling their thoughts on topics and emotions related to the sessions throughout the week in an effort to be more aware of the changes from day to day and to have a much more thorough conversation in the following session.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

To prepare for your first online therapy session, you can do a few things to ensure you are as ready as possible. Firstly, ensure you have Zoom installed, along with having access to some kind of web camera for video and headphones for privacy. You want to ensure you also have a private space within your home where you feel secure and comfortable speaking about your experiences away from others. The most important thing you can do to prepare for your first online therapy session is to acknowledge any concerns and discomforts with your clinician about the process right in the intake session in order to get those feelings out in the open, so you and your clinician can directly address and find solutions for them.

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

My therapist is Lesley Petersen and I have been a patient of hers for about four months now. She has been helping me through a stressful situation that I have been going through. I would recommend her because she is easy to talk to and non-judgmental.

awfully. Goes on vacation for two weeks. Double books me. Calls me one minute before our scheduled meeting time. Says the other person is inside the office and cannot see me. says to me I will call me that night and then says to me via a text message that I will call in the morning. Calls me at 11:am. We have our session where she keeps adding restrictions on me and says "it's nothing personal". Speaks very low that I cannot hear.Tells me she sees 50 people weekly and cannot talk on the phone.

Thriveworks is great and really cares for clients, I fully recommend them! And I honestly cannot say enough good things about Sharon Ryan. I never feel wrong, crazy, or judged while speaking with her. She is so comforting and provides excellent, accurate insights. I really appreciate her interest and understanding as well as her flexibility for appointments. I’ve been struggling with losing interest in hobbies that I once loved. With Sharon’s help, I’ve developed new interests I’ve always wanted to try and expanded my horizons. Thank you so much, truly, from the bottom of my heart!

I recommend checking out Thriveworks to find a mental health care provider that can suit your needs. The owners are sweet, genuine people who make it their mission to help others by connecting therapists and those who want a little guidance. Your mental health is important (especially these days) and you don't need to being in a crisis to see a therapist! In fact, its better to seek out a therapist before you can't cope on your own.
