What Is the Difference Between Therapy, Counseling, and Psychiatry?
Therapy, provided by our counselors and therapists, addresses emotional and behavioral challenges using therapeutic techniques for mental well-being. Counseling, offered by counselors or therapists, focuses on specific issues and life adjustments, while psychiatry, led by our psychiatric nurse practitioners, involves diagnosing and treating mental health conditions with medication.
What Are the Types of Therapists You Can See?
While availability may vary, at Thriveworks Counseling & Psychiatry, we offer:
- Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs): Specialized in social work and counseling for individuals, families, and groups.
- Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs): Focused on relationship and family-related issues.
- Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors (LPCs): Trained to offer counseling services for various emotional and mental health issues.
When you connect with a provider at Thriveworks, you’ll be sharing your experience with an industry-leading expert; someone with the experience and professional insight you need to move forward.

What Can Psychological Testing Do For Me?
Have you ever wondered what makes you think the way you do or act the way you do? Well, Thriveworks Counseling & Psychiatry Stamford offers psychological testing in addition to counseling and therapy services. Psychological testing can give you insight into your strengths and weaknesses and enable your doctor or psychologist to make an accurate diagnosis (when applicable).
At our office, we offer a variety of testing options, including:
- IQ Testing: You will be given a variety of different standardized tests to determine your reasoning abilities and short- and long-term memory.
- ADHD Testing: There are several different ADHD tests available, and your therapist or psychologist will determine the best fit for you. Other questionnaires and assessments will be used to determine an accurate diagnosis.
- Personality Testing: Personality testing can provide insight into your strengths, weaknesses, needs, and motivations. This type of assessment is useful for learning how to work through interpersonal challenges at home, work, and school.
- Achievement Testing: Achievement testing is typically given to children to measure their knowledge and skills. Achievement tests can be used to help place a child into a different grade level or a particular program.
- Differential Diagnosis Assessments: This test helps your psychologist determine what mental health disorder you might have. In instances where symptoms from multiple disorders are present, this assessment can provide clarification.
If you think you could benefit from psychological testing, reach out to Thriveworks Counseling & Psychiatry Stamford. We’ll schedule an appointment with you right away.
Consider Seeing a Licensed Psychiatrist at Thriveworks Counseling & Psychiatry Stamford
Psychiatrists are medical doctors with years of additional training in a psychiatric residency. They study mental illnesses and disorders with the goal of diagnosing, treating, and preventing mental health challenges.
If your treatment involves medication, your psychiatric provider will manage that process and identify the right dose for your symptoms. Some clients only require medication while others may need talk therapy. In these instances, psychiatric professionals work with their clients to identify how their thoughts may be impacting their problematic behaviors or uncomfortable emotions.
Whether your treatment calls for talk therapy, medication management, or some combination of both, our psychiatric providers at Thriveworks can meet with you virtually through online therapy to help you take the first step.
