What is your go-to approach for PTSD/trauma therapy?

Peta gay: My go-to: EMDR. The best benefit is no re-traumatizing because there is very little talking.

Victoria Ashley: My go-to approach for helping people in PTSD/trauma therapy is cognitive processing therapy (CPT). I find the best benefit in CPT because it teaches you to reframe negative thoughts about the trauma.

What tools do you teach in PTSD/trauma therapy?

Peta gay: I teach DBT coping skills to regulate emotions, progressive relaxation, and guided imagery.

Victoria Ashley: I teach the following tools in PTSD/trauma therapy:

  • Reflective talking on negative thoughts
  • Short writing assignments
  • Cognitive refocusing and reframing
  • Grounding techniques to focus on the present

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy?

Peta gay: I know when my client tells me that their trauma response is less intense.

Victoria Ashley: I know a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy when they are achieving their goals that we collectively agreed upon. This is demonstrated by their actions, demeanor, attitude, and personal assessments.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement PTSD/trauma therapy?

Peta gay: Clients can supplement sessions with self-initiated EMDR, such as tapping.

Victoria Ashley: Clients can supplement their time in therapy with external practices such as journaling, joining group activities, attending helpful seminars, and/or listening to positive podcasts.

What should someone do to prepare for starting PTSD/trauma therapy?

Peta gay: I suggest taking a general approach to educating yourself about what trauma interventions are out there.

Victoria Ashley: To prepare for your first PTSD/trauma therapy session, you can write down your main concerns and what you have done in the past to try to alleviate them.

V Ashleigh was excellent. I wish we had more sessions with her but insurance tangled us up. Counseling via Zoom was my first. It takes longer to get acquainted when not in person. But it was convenient.

Stephanie Kopecky is compassionate with a warm, sweet and gentle disposition that puts you at ease when you first meet her. Anyone who is initially hesitant about talking to a counselor will find that she provides a safe, welcoming atmosphere to relax and release. Her genuine care and concern for her clients is clear and present during each session. At the conclusion of each session, I feel a sense of relief and determination to let go of a fixed mindset to move beyond the analysis paralysis that is blocking my achievement of long-term goals. I value Stephanie's expertise, compassion, and support, all of which have contributed to stronger bonds within my relationships, greater confidence in my career, progress in my educational journey, and overall improved life satisfaction. Stephanie is amazing, and I highly recommend her to anyone.
