Family Therapy in Danbury, CT—Family Therapists and Counselors
When you think of family, what comes to mind? Maybe weekends at the beach or local park, grabbing ice cream at your favorite spot, and sitting down together for dinner at the table. At the same time, maybe you think of jealousy and arguments, hurt feelings, and slammed doors. Although we love our families, that love comes with a lot of ups and downs.
- Do you find yourself avoiding shared spaces such as the kitchen, living room, or laundry room?
- Do you feel on edge when with your family in public?
- Are your personal and professional relationships being affected by the turmoil you’re facing at home?
- Are you always nervous for family events and holidays because you never know what to expect?
It’s common for families to not be in balance all day, every day. However, it’s not healthy for anyone involved when the conflicts at home are causing stress that lasts for days, weeks, months, and even years.
Keeping our family together means doing what’s best for each individual and what’s best for the family as a whole.” – Unknown

What Is the Purpose of Family Therapy?
Family therapy is designed to help rebuild and mend broken relationships within families. It can also help families with their communication skills and understanding. It can guide your family in making meaningful changes that will benefit everyone. Oftentimes, families need guidance and support when having tough and open conversations – even conversations that have been put off for years. For example:
Amy and her sister got into an argument over two years ago. She’s upset that her sister doesn’t see her side of things and believes that her sister has made up multiple lies to the rest of their family. It’s caused a giant shift in their family dynamic and even some family members aren’t on speaking terms because of their argument. Instead of communicating like adults, Amy’s sister continues to pretend like nothing happened. They haven’t spoken since the argument and Amy doesn’t see a point in even trying.
Whether you’re in a situation like Amy or going through something else, a Thriveworks Danbury counselor can help facilitate healthy communication and conflict-resolution techniques. Here is a list of common reasons why families seek out the help of family therapy:
- Financial strain
- The loss of a loved one
- Mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety
- Marital problems
- Addiction and/or substance abuse
- Parenting disagreements
- Poor communication
- Child rebellion
- Coping with a disability
- And more!
Your therapist or counselor will guide you through these tough situations and help you develop a deepened connection with your relatives.
What Happens in Family Therapy?
Family therapy is designed to be short-term, meaning that families can finish their counseling in 12 sessions, give or take. Each session will likely last about 60 minutes and the topics discussed will vary depending on the progress made and family members in attendance. Your Thriveworks Danbury family therapist will create a unique treatment plan for you and your loved ones based on your individual needs, wants, and goals. To do so, they’ll assess each family member to identify where the cracks are in your relationships.
Once a treatment plan is in place, you can expect to discuss the following with your family therapist:
Identified issues at hand, the current state of your relationships, your family’s strengths and weaknesses, each individuals’ thoughts and opinions, individual behaviors that are negatively impacting the group, expectations of family roles, and more.
To achieve these discussions, a variety of different psychological techniques and methods will be utilized to meet everyone on a level that makes the most sense to them. While having in-depth conversations about difficult topics can be scary at first, they’ll help you and your family make important progress in repairing your relationships. We’ll provide you with a safe, open, and honest space to talk freely without judgment.
