What is social anxiety disorder?
Also called “social phobia”, social anxiety disorder is characterized by extreme fear or anxiety in social situations, or situations where a person is going to be observed by others. Some common examples include meeting new people, speaking in front of a group, eating or drinking in front of others, or having to “mingle” at parties. People with social anxiety often avoid these types of situations, even if they really want to participate, because they’re afraid their anxiety will show. Social anxiety goes beyond shyness or stage fright, and can get in the way of reaching goals and feeling satisfied with your life.
