Custody Evaluations – Counselors and Therapists in Blacksburg, VA
It can no longer be assumed that child custody will be in the format of a “sole custodian” versus the “visiting parent.” Many states now recognize some form of joint/shared custody that understands that decision-making and caregiving duties and responsibilities often will involve more than one adult. The law also recognizes that custody disputes aren’t always between a traditional husband and wife couple, and therefore may not necessarily even involve divorce. Some parents have never been married and may never even have lived together. Additionally, child custody disputes can arise after years of successful co-parenting when one parent seeks to relocate for work or other reasons.
Parents involved in custody decisions may have several resources available to them, including therapy, counseling, consultations, mediation and other forms of conflict resolution. In the overwhelming majority (90%) of cases, parents agree to a child custody arrangement on their own. And usually there’s no dispute for the court to decide upon. BUT if parties are unable to reach such an agreement, the court must intervene in order to assign decision making, caretaking and access, using the “best interests of the child” as the standard in their determination of this restructuring of rights and responsibilities.
