Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I always enjoyed learning about psychology and mental health. I like to analyze and solve problems and help people. An internship at JMU's counseling center during my undergraduate degree confirmed my interest in the counseling field. After my graduate degree from RU, I worked for nearly 10 years as an academic advisor at Virginia Tech. I realized a calling to help LGBTQ+ folks. To complete my Human Sexuality Studies degree, I interned in community mental health, which confirmed my desire to become a Licensed Professional Counselor.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
Mental health matters. You are enough! You deserve to enjoy life and be surrounded by love and support!
What inspires you?
Human development: Watching a baby grow and develop complicated skills, try out different identities and interests, and later understand and live out their purpose makes me wonder, how did they do that? How did I do that? When people overcome challenges and maintain positive changes in their lives. Resiliency.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
To see at least 1 rainbow on a wall or the desk. To see stuffed animals, toys, and other small objects they can use as self-soothes while telling me their story. To feel comfortable sharing. To know what to expect from me as their counselor. To get a feel of my personality. To leave with an appointment card with my contact information and their next session information on it.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
Establish a therapeutic relationship and rapport and work towards creating a plan with goals and action steps towards successful therapy!
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?
I like assisting clients with processing their thoughts and feelings about their challenges. Still, I am flexible to allow time for meditation videos, yoga stretches, activities, or standing up and writing on a whiteboard on the wall. I meet you where you are. My humor includes silliness, laughing at the absurd, references to TV or movie comedies, and puns!
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I spend a lot of time with my spouse watching TV, cuddling with our three cats, Harley, Duke, and Vivienne, and going out to dinner and different events, especially stand-up comedy and live music. I also enjoy time with friends and family.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I'm pretty tall, 5'9".
