John McAnulty is by far the best counselor that I have ever experienced. He is kind, compassionate and caring. He heard every word I would say and gave me so many tools that I use to this day to cope with my past struggles. He takes his time to not only listen, but to respond in the most caring way. I will forever be grateful for all he did for my family and I.

What Is the Difference Between Therapy, Counseling, and Psychiatry?

Therapy, provided by our counselors and therapists, addresses emotional and behavioral challenges using therapeutic techniques for mental well-being. Counseling, offered by counselors or therapists, focuses on specific issues and life adjustments, while psychiatry, led by our psychiatric nurse practitioners, involves diagnosing and treating mental health conditions with medication.

What Are the Types of Therapists You Can See?

While availability may vary, at Thriveworks Counseling & Psychiatry Virginia Beach, we offer:

  • Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs): Specialized in social work and counseling for individuals, families, and groups.
  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs): Focused on relationship and family-related issues.
  • Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs): Trained to offer counseling services for various emotional and mental health issues.

When you connect with a provider at Thriveworks, you’ll be sharing your experience with an industry-leading expert; someone with the experience and professional insight you need to move forward.

How Much Does Therapy Cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

Schedule an Appointment with a Licensed Thriveworks Psychiatrist

If you’re struggling with a mood disorder, personality disorder, substance abuse, or another mental health issue, psychiatric care may offer the help you need. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor that can take mental and physical factors into account when it comes to diagnosis and treatment.

Treating mental and emotional disorders may involve a combination of psychotherapy (talk therapy) and medication, which a psychiatric professional can prescribe like a medical doctor. Talk therapy involves expressing your thoughts and emotions to a mental health professional who can listen and provide helpful input.

If you’d like to speak to a licensed psychiatric provider, Thriveworks Counseling & Psychiatry Virginia Beach is standing by.
