What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

When a client is struggling with depression, it is important for me to use motivational interviewing skills. This is beneficial because it shows them that I am listening, that I want to understand their struggles, and am proud of them for even just talking about it. Motivational interviewing is a great approach because it helps clients through the change process.

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

When someone is depressed, it is first important to validate their emotions because they may not have received that from other people. I can find educating about the stages of change, stages of grief, and promoting self-care to be beneficial.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

A client may show progress in several different ways depending upon each person. Progress might look like getting out of bed more, improving their sleep schedule, eating a more balanced diet, reaching out for support, and just making sure their basic needs are met.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement depression counseling?

In between sessions, it is important for clients to feel supported so I encourage them to spend time with whoever their support network may be. I encourage them to re-engage in activities that they once enjoyed or even try something new!

What should someone do to prepare for starting depression counseling?

It is not the client's job to prepare for the first session. By showing up, shows me that you want to make a change and I will meet you where you are at.

Starting Depression counseling

Is it worth going to therapy for depression?

It is absolutely worth going to therapy for depression — depression counseling helps people better manage their symptoms and get back to living happier lives again.

How does depression counseling work?

Depression counseling works by helping people pinpoint life problems, distorted thought patterns, and other causes of their depression, then process and work through them in order to mitigate the negative effects those factors have on their lives.

Signs of depression

Common signs of depression include:

  • Consistent low mood
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Oversleeping or difficulty sleeping
  • Changes in diet (eating much more or less)
  • Withdrawal and isolation
  • Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Loss of interest in previous hobbies or activities
  • Excessive substance use

Is depression counseling conducted in person or online?

Thriveworks depression counseling in Grand Rapids Charter Township, MI is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How often should you attend depression therapy sessions?

Depression counseling can last for a few weeks, months, or longer, dependent on the severity of one’s depression as well as their needs and preferences.

How much does depression counseling cost?

At Thriveworks, we take most major forms of insurance, which means that many of our clients only pay a $0-$50 co-pay per session. However, there are also self-pay options that sit around $200 per session, depending on the service and location, for those who are out-of-network.

I am loving Thriveworks not only for the convenience of virtual appointments, but this is the first place I’ve tried that has actually helped. My therapist is incredibly kind and helpful and is amazing at helping me with any issues I’m struggling with. They paired me with a therapist that is experienced in the specific areas I needed help with, and it has been wonderful. I would absolutely recommend Thriveworks!

I was in need of a psychiatrist for chronic depression and anxiety. I came across thrive having only a 4 month wait instead 9 to 12 month wait with any other psychiatrist. This was wonderful news. I met Denise as my clinician. She is very empathetic very knowledgeable. She has helped me alot sine my first vist. She is very dedicated to her patients which I truly appreciate. I would highly recommend her for any psychiatric needs. I think she goes above and beyond her role. She is a caring individual. There should be more people like Denise. She needs to be recognized for her work.
