Psychiatry allows people struggling to manage mental conditions or disorders to get access to medications that will make daily functioning easier, as well as work through any mental factors that might be causing or worsening their condition. Though medications can’t cure mental disorders, medication can make symptoms more manageable, making the process of psychotherapeutic treatment easier and more effective. Psychiatric care can be available through in-person psychiatry and online psychiatry, depending on where you live and your own preferences. However, psychiatric providers at Thriveworks in Winston-Salem, NC specifically offer online psychiatry to their clients.
A therapist has an education specifically rooted in therapeutic practice, approaches, techniques, and treatment. They cannot prescribe medications for clients, though they often refer clients to psychiatrists for medication management. Psychiatrists are medically trained doctors who specialize in mental health treatment, mainly through medication management and prescription, though they can also practice therapy.
A Psychiatry Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a highly trained and licensed professional who specializes in mental health care. Psychiatric NPs at Thriveworks are qualified to prescribe medications for a variety of mental health conditions. They work closely with you to develop a personalized treatment plan.
Oftentimes, psychiatrists or psychiatric professionals will perform a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, which involves an in-depth discussion about your symptoms, medical history, and current medications. Once they reach a diagnosis, they may suggest starting certain medications depending on your condition and the intensity of your symptoms.

Psychiatric providers can help many different people. Broadly speaking, they can help those who may be experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition. Here are a couple of mental health conditions that are commonly diagnosed and/or treated by a psychiatrist:
Psychiatric providers can go on to offer therapy, medication, or another form of treatment for the above conditions as well as substance abuse, addiction, and others. They can also work with another mental health provider to ensure you receive this treatment.
In addition, some psychiatric providers specialize in adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, and others.
The biggest difference between psychiatric providers and psychologies is that psychiatric providers are able to prescribe and manage medication. Typically, psychologists cannot (with the exception of those who practice in a few states).
If you do require or could benefit from medication, a psychiatric provider can help you find a medication that works the best for you. They’ll talk to you about how exactly you should take it, what side effects you might experience, and other important information related to medication management.
