Starting Life coaching

What is Life coaching?

Life coaching is a personalized support system that helps individuals clarify goals, develop action plans, and navigate challenges. Coaches employ effective communication and active listening to assist clients in overcoming obstacles, unlocking their potential, and achieving personal growth for a more fulfilling life.

How does Life coaching work?

In life coaching, our coaches utilize diverse therapeutic techniques that are tailored to individuals, including cognitive behavioral, solution-focused, mindfulness, and positive psychology approaches. They also utilize active listening and empathetic communication to provide a supportive space for you to explore and achieve personal goals and overcome challenges, fostering personal growth and clarity.

Is Life coaching conducted in person or online?

Life coaching with our therapists in Winston-Salem, NC is conducted both in person and virtually via online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does Life coaching last?

The number of life coaching sessions someone attends can differ based on the coach and the client's choices. How many sessions are needed and how often they occur often hinges on the client's objectives and the complexity of their concerns. Some clients might opt for a few sessions to tackle particular goals or issues, while others may decide on ongoing coaching sessions to work on personal growth and life enhancement over a more extended period of time. Thriveworks Winston-Salem therapists work with clients to create goals and potential timelines for treatment.

Anna’s job pays the bills. Her co-workers respect her, and Anna’s boss has been giving her more and more responsibility. Anna has a good job, but she also has a big decision to make. She could stay in her current job. Anna could also go into business with her brother. This has been her dream ever since she was little. Anna and her brother would play store for hours when they were kids. It was just a dream for many years, but the perfect location opened up. Anna’s brother put together a business plan. Their dream could become a reality. However, like any new business, there are no guarantees. Should she stay in her stable job or take a risk and go into business with her brother? Before making a decision, Anna meets with her life coach. During their session, Anna and her life coach dream, question, consider, plan, and by the end of the time, Anna knows what she wants to do.

Justice is moving across the country in just a few weeks. He has always wanted to switch things up. For the past decade, Justice has worked at the same office, lived in the same home, and eaten at the same restaurants. When a job opened up in his company in a new location, Justice went for it. Now, he is preparing to relocate and rebuild a new life. Justice is excited, but he is also nervous. Sleeping has been difficult the past few days. He is staying up, wondering how he will make new friends, what his new apartment will be life, and how he will get established in his new job. Justice decides to reach out and meet with a life coach. Together, they make a plan for his personal and professional life. They continue to meet via teleconference throughout the transition. A year later, Justice is so glad he set out on this adventure, and he is so glad he reached out for help from a life coach.

The life coaches at Thriveworks Counseling in Winston-Salem, NC have worked with many people just like Justice and Anna. Everyone has opportunities and challenges. What Is a Life Coach?

A little support, a little nudge is exactly what life coaching is. It is a new but growing form of mental health care. Life coaching serves many people who do not need or want traditional therapy. Here is a picture of who life coaches are and what they often do:

  • Life coaches help their clients achieve their fullest potential.
  • Life coaching is often goal-oriented, helping clients in their personal and professional lives.
  • Every life coach is unique and offers a personalized style.
  • Therapists and life coaches are two separate types of mental health professionals, although there are some therapists who also offer life coaching.
  • Life coaching is a very practical discipline. A client’s needs often drive their relationship with their life coach.
  • Some life coaches work independently and have their own practice.
  • Some life coaches team up with other therapeutic or medical professionals to offer holistic care to an individual.
  • An organization called The International Coach Federation (ICF) lays out ethics and professional development standards for life coaches, but these are recommendations and are not binding.
  • “Life coach” is an unregulated title, and the quality of care offered can vary greatly from coach to coach.
  • The techniques that life coaches often utilize are founded upon principles that athletic coach use, especially regarding goal setting and focused attention.

Why Choose to Work with a Life Coach?

There are many potential benefits of working with a life coach. Because life coaching is focused upon helping clients reach their full potential, the potential benefits will be personal. But generally speaking, life coaches often help their clients…

  • Establish a clear understanding of who they are and what they want from life.
  • Establish a clear path of how to achieve what they want from life—setting appropriate goals.
  • Articulate their core values and how those values are the foundation for their life choices.
  • Receive feedback. Life coaches often give honest and unbiased evaluations, but they also work with clients, teaching them how to receive feedback from other sources as well.
  • Accept accountability to achieve their full potential.
  • Learn techniques for achieving their full potential.
  • Personal development.
  • Professional development.
  • Carve out time and space in their lives for dreaming, wonder, questioning, and planning.
  • Set up incentives for overcoming setbacks and tackling roadblocks.
  • Increase their self-esteem and confidence.
