About
Life is hard, and connection and vulnerability take courage. Through the power of sharing your story, we can make life feel less like you are losing the battle and more like you are the hero.
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with 14 years of experience providing compassionate, evidence-based care to individuals navigating life’s challenges. I specialize in supporting clients managing anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and self-esteem concerns. I am dedicated to creating a safe, affirming space where healing, growth, and self-discovery can occur through insight, empowerment, and mindful awareness.
I earned my master’s in social work from Loyola University of Chicago and my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. My therapeutic approach is eclectic, integrating acceptance and commitment therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and trauma-focused therapy.
I believe self-awareness is the foundation of change. My role is to guide clients toward understanding their emotions, cultivating self-compassion, and taking purposeful steps toward healing. Together, we build resilience and confidence to move through pain, discover inner strength, and create a more fulfilling, balanced life.

Esteban Minsk is a licensed clinical mental health counselor (LCMHC) in North Carolina with over 9 years of experience working as a psychotherapist and readjustment counselor. He has worked with adult and senior-aged clients that are experiencing a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety, relationship issues, parenting problems, career challenges, grief/loss, life challenges, and end-of-life issues.
The main focus of his practice has been working with clients who have experienced trauma in their lives, whether it be physical, sexual, or emotional. Esteban is a compassionate, caring, and empathetic counselor with first-hand experience with the benefits that counseling can provide. As a therapist, he is a strong believer in education, and before introducing any type of therapeutic approach, Esteban will fully explain to you the process, and ask you to personally do some research so that if you have any questions, he will be able to answer them upfront.
Esteban knows that it can be scary and difficult to take the first step towards receiving treatment, but you will get through your challenges together. The process of change takes time and perseverance, but he wants you to know that he'll be there with you. At times, change might seem unattainable, but if you commit to implementing the things you agree upon together, change will start to occur.
You deserve dedicated time with a mental health professional — it can be life-changing.

My go-to approach for helping people in grief & loss counseling is using the work of the Grief Recovery Handook by John James and Russell Friedman, along with using evidence from brain studies on how the brain resolves grief and loss.
I teach cognitive challenging and reframing, how to navigate the thoughts and emotions of grief, and finding ways to honor the loss.
I know a client is making meaningful progress in grief & loss counseling when a client reports they are less upset and when they can talk about their loss more easily, with fondness and gratitude, rather than pain and regret.
Clients can supplement their time in grief counseling with positive self-care.
To prepare for their first grief counseling session, an individual can plan their self-care, have some tissues on hand, and know that it is a privilege to join them in this journey.
Grief and loss counseling helps people grieve difficult losses including the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, or the end of a relationship. Thriveworks grief therapists in Winston-Salem, NC have specific experience, training, and skills that enable them to best support grieving individuals.
Grief and loss counseling isn’t one-size-fits-all, but it involves sharing about your loss and then working with your counselor to acknowledge and accept your new reality in its wake. Your provider at Thriveworks in Winston-Salem, NC will design your treatment plan around your unique needs and goals for therapy, applying the counseling techniques that best support them.
If you have recently experienced an event like the death of a loved one, a breakup or divorce, the loss of a job, or another major life change, then you may want to seek grief and loss counseling. Grief can be caused by many experiences and events, so if you feel that you are having trouble moving on from a certain event or find that it is still impacting your life and functioning, grief and loss counseling can help you process it more effectively so that you can move on and once again find fulfillment and satisfaction in your life.
There are many counseling theories for treating grief, one of the most frequently used being the dual process model of grief which helps people acknowledge who or what they’ve lost through rumination while also adjusting to the new roles and identities that this loss has now placed on them. There are also many commonly used therapy approaches used in grief and loss counseling, including Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and traumatic grief therapy.
Grief & loss counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.
For many, grief and loss counseling lasts for about 6 months. For others, it may last shorter or longer, depending on the severity of their loss and their grief.
Grief and loss isn’t something that’s meant to be managed alone. It’s critically important that we obtain all of the love and support we can get during this time. If you’ve recently lost a friend, family member, pet, or job, don’t shy away from the support of your loved ones. Welcome their help and support—and if you need additional assistance, consider working with a grief counselor. Grief counselors specialize in helping people grieve painful losses and move forward with their lives.

As we mentioned earlier, grief can trigger a bout of painful emotions. It can trigger other emotional, mental, and physical reactions as well. If you’re going through a difficult time due to a loss, it’s important that you know it is normal to experience a range of emotions, thoughts, even physical responses to the loss. Here are a few grief symptoms that are commonly experienced:
Additionally, you might be preoccupied with thoughts about your loss. You might long to spend more time alone or, on the other hand, cling to loved ones for their support. You might become more aggressive and incite fights with others; or, you might even blame others (or yourself) for your loss.
Simply put, grief counseling is a mental health service that helps individuals process and grieve their loss in a healthy manner. When we lose a beloved friend, family, pet, or job, we can quickly begin to feel depressed and lonely. A grief counselor can help us understand our grief symptoms, from these painful emotions to the physical changes we might experience.
Grief counselors also function to provide us with the tools for coping during this painful period. They can offer tips for channeling our emotions into a creative outlet instead of bottling them up inside. They can also encourage us to talk to our loved ones about our loss, join support groups, or otherwise mourn our loss properly.
Grief counseling at Thriveworks in Forsyth County is here to provide you with guidance and support during what is one of the most painful experiences we are forced to endure. Our grief counselors want to help you process your loss, grieve your lost loved one (or thing) properly, and figure out how to move forward from here.
