What is your go-to approach for individual therapy?

I use strengths-based therapy, CBT techniques, solution-focused therapy, and mindfulness-based methods to help clients meet their therapy goals. I prefer these approaches because they empower clients to make changes to improve their situations. I also believe in the regulation of body and mind to help improve day-to-day functioning and relationships.

What tools do you teach in individual therapy?

I use a strengths-based approach (identifying a client's strength in spite of circumstances) and CBT approaches (reframing unhealthy thought patterns to impact mood and behavior). I do a lot of work around feeling identification, the circle of control, and the exploration of patterns for eventual reframing. I also help clients explore habits vs. intention. Sometimes, we have to break up with old patterns/habits to feel better, and breaking up is hard to do!

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy?

I see progress when clients start to connect patterns about how their reported issue impacts them day to day, or when they start to catch/change unhealthy patterns of thinking (cognitive distortions, negative thoughts, self-defeating thoughts).

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement individual therapy?

Clients can supplement therapy by keeping a journal or notebook. I like the “Self Love Workbook” by Megan Logan, LCSW. Clients really like it! It's low-cost with great reviews by other users. It does not have to be complicated; a simple spiral or any kind of notebook is also helpful! Keep one just for documenting thoughts, wins, gratitude, or notes from sessions. Consider what works best for you. Also, engage in basic self-care. You can stay hydrated by drinking water, eat routine meals, exercise, meet with friends/connect with family, get outside in nature, take a shower/change clothes everyday, be picky about social media consumption (or TV), and establish a routine sleep schedule. Think about these tasks as a way to reset your mind for a new day!

What should someone do to prepare for starting individual therapy?

Clients can explore their strengths, consider what goals they would like to work on, and consider what ways they have been taking care of themselves.

Starting Individual therapy

What is individual therapy?

Individual therapy, also known as individual-counseling, allows people to engage in private sessions with a skilled therapist, counselor, or psychologist. The core objective of individual therapy is to establish a secure and confidential setting where you can openly discuss whatever emotional, psychological, or behavioral challenges you face. Through these one-on-one sessions, the client and therapist work together to delve into, comprehend, and ultimately find solutions for the issues at hand in their life.

How does individual therapy work?

Individual therapy unfolds in a structured process, commencing with an initial assessment in which the therapist gathers essential information about your history, concerns, and objectives. Together, you and your therapist collaboratively establish specific, attainable goals for your sessions, which can encompass symptom alleviation, personal development, or finding solutions to particular challenges.

Can individual therapy help me?

Yes, individual therapy, also known as individual-counseling, at Thriveworks can help you to improve your mental health and overall quality of life.

Is individual therapy conducted in person or online?

Individual therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does individual therapy last?

The duration of your individual therapy sessions will vary. The decision on the number and frequency of sessions is typically collaboratively determined by the client and therapist.

How much does individual therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

I have known Dena Wentz for many years. She is a compassionate and insightful advocate for everyone she encounters. She fully listens to you when you talk and is perceptive enough to take each individual's life situation into context. Instead of using a "one size fits all" approach, Dena truly works to understand each person's unique position and how that affects her or him on a larger scale. With Dena, I always feel appreciated and supported!

I have worked with Mrs. Dena Wentz for over a decade. During this time, she has always been an extremely stable positive force in our clinic. Her sense of fairness and common sense is beyond reproach and she keeps us all grounded in our approaches to various patient care circumstances. She often makes us stop and think about where the patient is coming from when we are frustrated with a patient's lack of compliance or adherence to recommended therapies. She is the kind of person you want to listen to your difficulties and concerns because she is such a caring and empathetic person. She will then make significant efforts to provide you with solutions. She is also a very thoughtful cheerleader and motivator for our team and makes sure to mark our achievements and our professional acknowledgments. She has frequently been there for me when I have struggled to work with patients and helped facilitate the communication channels I need to accomplish my role. I highly value my relationship with Dena we all are fortunate to have her on our team!
