What is your go-to approach for anxiety therapy?

Patty: I use box breathing exercises. Clients like it because they can do it anywhere.

Barbara: My main approach is CBT. I use CBT skills to teach cognitive restructuring.

Anna: My go-to approach is psychoeducation/cognitive behavior therapy. I find the best benefit in educating the client on anxiety and the use of evidence-based tools and strategies proven to be effective because it helps change clients' thoughts about themselves and the world around them to help change their behaviors.

Sakura: My go-to approach for treating anxiety is acceptance and commitment therapy. I find the best benefit in being able to accept your thoughts, feelings, sensations, and memories because it helps to bring more vitality and meaning to life.

What tools do you teach in anxiety therapy?

Patty: I teach clients to identify triggers.

Barbara: I teach the following formats:

  • Rational vs. irrational thinking
  • Mindfulness skills
  • Emotional vs. wise mind

Anna: I teach:

  • Breathing techniques: I teach the client breathing exercises designed to calm the client to reduce and manage stress.
  • Negative self-talk: I help the client identify negative self-talk, challenge the truth of thoughts, and reframe negative thoughts to positive thoughts.
  • Strength-based plan and core beliefs: I help the client identify strengths and weaknesses to increase self-esteem and identify negative core beliefs to create a plan for positive change.
  • Guided imagery: I teach the client to relax by visualizing peaceful images such as the beach or mountains to manage stress.
  • Mindfulness techniques: I teach the client centering and grounded to bring the client to the present moment to find peace.

Sakura: I teach the following tools in anxiety therapy:

  • Acceptance and commitment- I teach clients to allow themselves to accept their thoughts, feelings, and sensations to increase their psychological flexibility.
  • Mindfulness- I teach clients to accept their reactions and be present in the moment.
  • Committed action- I help clients set goals and be committed to them despite contrary thoughts or emotions that might arise.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy?

Patty: I see progress when the client is making progress on their goals.

Barbara: I know a client is making meaningful progress through self-reports of reduced frequency or intensity of their anxious thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

Anna: I know a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy when they can verbalize the use of coping strategies that have helped reduce anxious tendencies, evident by a reduced GAD-7 assessment score.

Sakura: I know a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy when they are able to become aware of and differentiate between unpleasant internal experiences and psychological problems.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement anxiety therapy?

Patty: Clients can supplement therapy by using coping skills.

Barbara: I encourage clients to practice mindfulness skills and to utilize rational thinking skills on a daily basis.

Anna: Clients can supplement their time in anxiety therapy by using coping techniques, i.e. breathing exercises, mindfulness, journaling, and completing home work assignments.

Sakura: Clients can supplement their time in anxiety therapy by completing workbooks for anxiety and practicing mindfulness exercises at home.

What should someone do to prepare for starting anxiety therapy?

Patty: Clients can identify the information needed for intake.

Barbara: To prepare for anxiety therapy, keep a daily log of the frequency of anxious thoughts, feelings, and behavior, as well as any instances of panic attacks, past or current.

Anna: I encourage the client to identify symptoms and coping mechanisms they may have used to prepare for the first therapy session.

Sakura: To prepare for your first anxiety therapy session, you can write down your goals for therapy. Focus on how you want to feel, act, and think after therapy.

Starting Anxiety therapy

What is anxiety therapy?

Anxiety therapy helps people better understand and manage their anxiety. Anxiety therapists at Thriveworks in Midlothian, VA can develop a treatment plan that will help you better manage your day-to-day anxiety or your anxiety disorder.

How does anxiety therapy work?

Anxiety therapy involves talking to a therapist about symptoms, potential causes, and more. Thriveworks Midlothian therapists will then work with you to determine where your anxiety might stem from and teach you effective coping mechanisms.

How to deal with anxiety?

One of the best ways to deal with anxiety is to learn about your own anxiety: your symptoms, what triggers it, and what coping mechanisms have been effective in the past. When you learn what your anxiety is tied to, it can help you be mindful of what’s really happening as well as prevent and mitigate symptoms by processing and working through the issue in therapy. Other strategies that have been shown to help manage anxiety are meditation, challenging anxious thoughts, exercising, and journaling.

Symptoms of anxiety

Common symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Sense of impending danger
  • Nervousness/restlessness
  • Trouble focusing
  • Excessive sweating
  • Shaking
  • Headaches
  • Stomach issues
  • Fatigue
  • Panic attacks
  • Increased heart rate

What is the best therapy for anxiety?

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can be incredibly effective in treating anxiety and anxiety disorders. Other effective techniques include exposure therapy, Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and EMDR therapy.

Is anxiety therapy conducted in person or online?

Anxiety therapy is conducted both in person and online, depending on the individual’s preferences and their therapist’s availability. We suggest choosing the option that best suits your needs.

How long does anxiety therapy last?

On average, people can tend to attend 15 to 20 session of anxiety therapy (five or more months). However, this number is heavily dependent on the type of anxiety that’s being treated and its severity, with many choosing to attend anxiety therapy for a longer period of time to ensure its effectiveness long-term.

Is therapy worth it for anxiety?

Yes, it is worth going to therapy for anxiety. If you are struggling with regular anxious thoughts and feelings that are affecting your day-to-day life or you suspect that you have an anxiety disorder, you should seek expert anxiety help.

Do I Have an Anxiety Disorder? What Are the Symptoms?

As mentioned above, there are different kinds of anxiety disorders, which come with various symptoms. That said, generalized anxiety is the most common form of anxiety—those with this form of anxiety are anxious more days than not, for at least 6 months straight, about a variety of events. For example: someone who worries excessively about their job, health, and kids. These individuals often experience a combination of the following symptoms:

  • They can’t control their anxiety/excessive worrying
  • They feel restless or tire quickly
  • They have a hard time concentrating
  • They become irritable
  • They develop muscle tension
  • They have trouble sleeping

How Does Anxiety Counseling Work?

Cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, is a common and effective method of treatment for anxiety disorders. This approach focuses on changing negative thoughts and thinking patterns, which will help to reduce or improve anxiety. For instance, CBT can help someone with generalized anxiety to realize that worrying about work each day isn’t helpful. A CBT counselor can also help someone with a specific phobia (such as an intense fear of spiders) understand that they rarely come into contact with spiders—and when they do, the spiders are harmless.

I have known Dena Wentz for many years. She is a compassionate and insightful advocate for everyone she encounters. She fully listens to you when you talk and is perceptive enough to take each individual's life situation into context. Instead of using a "one size fits all" approach, Dena truly works to understand each person's unique position and how that affects her or him on a larger scale. With Dena, I always feel appreciated and supported!

I have worked with Mrs. Dena Wentz for over a decade. During this time, she has always been an extremely stable positive force in our clinic. Her sense of fairness and common sense is beyond reproach and she keeps us all grounded in our approaches to various patient care circumstances. She often makes us stop and think about where the patient is coming from when we are frustrated with a patient's lack of compliance or adherence to recommended therapies. She is the kind of person you want to listen to your difficulties and concerns because she is such a caring and empathetic person. She will then make significant efforts to provide you with solutions. She is also a very thoughtful cheerleader and motivator for our team and makes sure to mark our achievements and our professional acknowledgments. She has frequently been there for me when I have struggled to work with patients and helped facilitate the communication channels I need to accomplish my role. I highly value my relationship with Dena we all are fortunate to have her on our team!
