ADHD Testing in Fort Lauderdale, FL—ADHD Testing and Assessments

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects millions of people in the United States each year. It’s most common to be diagnosed with ADHD as a child or teen when signs and symptoms are ever-prevalent. Roughly 6 million kids are diagnosed with this mental health condition each year. Out of those 6 million kids, 6 in 10 kids also have another mental, emotional, or behavioral disorder associated with their ADHD. With this disorder so common amongst children between the ages of 2 and 17, it’s important to understand and recognize the signs and symptoms for early detection. The sooner ADHD is diagnosed, the sooner kids, teens, and adults can get the help they need to control their symptoms and live a full, successful life.

What Is ADHD?

ADHD is a common developmental disorder that has recognizable signs and symptoms. While it’s most commonly diagnosed in children, adults can also struggle with ADHD. If symptoms aren’t caught in a timely manner, it can cause kids to have problems at school, at home, or even with friends.

There are different types, or presentations, of ADHD including inattentive presentation, hyperactive/impulsive presentation, and combined presentation. Each variation of ADHD has certain signs and requirements to have an official diagnosis.

Signs and Symptoms of Inattentive Presentation

  • Struggles to stay organized
  • Constantly losing things
  • Avoids time-consuming tasks and activities
  • Is often forgetful
  • Has a hard time organizing tasks
  • Does not follow instructions
  • Can be easily distracted by stimuli
  • Difficulty listening when spoken to
  • 16 and younger must present 6 or more of the symptoms, 17 and older must present five or more symptoms for 6 months or longer

Signs and Symptoms of Hyperactive/Impulsive Presentation

  • Are impatient
  • Constantly “on the go”
  • Have a hard time sitting still
  • Blurt out answers and inappropriate comments
  • Act out and don’t think about consequences
  • Can’t keep their hands to themselves
  • Have a hard time engaging in quiet activities
  • Talk constantly
  • Feel restless and squirm frequently
  • 16 and younger must present 6 or more of the symptoms, 17 and older must present five or more symptoms for 6 months or longer

Combined Presentation

  • Combined presentation combines both inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive presentation
  • For children who are 16 years old or younger, they must present six or more symptoms of each presentation
  • For those who are 17 years old and older, five or more symptoms of each presentation must be present

If you or your child are experiencing some of these symptoms and want to have solidified answers, consider working with a professional ADHD tester at Thriveworks Fort Lauderdale Counseling.

ADHD Testing: What to Expect During and After

To test for ADHD, we might give a client tests to see how they think,” explains Sean Hayes PsyD of Thriveworks Counseling in Sterling, VA. For example, a person with ADHD might be able to solve puzzles very well, but they may struggle more on tasks requiring them to pay attention. We compare the person’s performances on these tasks to others their own age to see which areas they are weaker or stronger in, and these comparisons can help us to tell if they have the weaknesses we would expect for someone with ADHD.”

ADHD can be treated with a combination of behavior therapy and medication. Depending on your unique situation, needs, and goals, your psychologist will work with you to determine what the best course of action is moving forward. Getting enough physical activity, limiting the amount of screen time, getting enough sleep, and developing healthy eating habits are all small ways you can get started. Your Thriveworks Fort Lauderdale counselor will ensure that you or your child gets back on track so you can live happily and more stress-free.
