Starting Grief counseling

What is Grief counseling?

Grief counseling helps people grieve difficult losses including the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, or the end of a relationship. It helps people navigate their grief process and eventually accept, understand, and move forward from their loss. Grief counselors have specific experience, training, and skills that enable them to best-support grieving individuals.

How does Grief counseling work?

Grief counseling isn't one-size-fits-all, but it involves sharing about your loss and then working with your counselor to acknowledge and accept your new reality in its wake. Your Thriveworks grief counselor will design your treatment plan around your unique needs and goals for therapy, applying the counseling techniques that best support them. It may take place as individual-counseling or a form of group therapy such as Family therapy.

Is Grief counseling conducted in person or online?

Grief counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does Grief counseling last?

For many, grief counseling lasts for about 6 months. For others, it may last shorter or longer, depending on the severity of their loss and their grief.

Need more help deciding?

Losing someone you’re close with—be it a parent, a brother, a sister, or a spouse—can be an extremely painful and all-around emotional experience. Other losses, like the loss of a pet, a miscarriage, or even the loss of a job can prove to be just as painful. The common denominator is that these endeavors involve letting go of an important part of our lives and facing tough emotions like anger, confusion, and despair.

Grieving any sort of loss can be agonizing. And often, grieving properly requires an ample amount of support, of which a grief counselor can provide. Grief counselors specialize in helping people through their grief process, from accepting their loss to managing the difficult emotions that accompany it. These experts help people who just recently experienced a great loss as well as those who have been grieving for quite some time now. Grief counselors can provide the right help and support at any stage of the grief process.

“Grief is like the ocean; it comes in waves, ebbing and flowing. Sometimes the water is calm, and sometimes it is overwhelming. All we can do is learn to swim.” –Vicki Harrison

What Is Grief? Am I Grieving Properly?

Grief simply refers to one’s response to loss. There are different grief responses, including normal grief and complicated grief. The former is characterized by feelings like distress as well as behaviors like the inability to go normally about one’s life after their loss. The good news is that with the right support, those who experience normal grief can get through it and live happily again. Complicated grief, however, is a little more complex. This type of grief response is characterized by intense feelings, like despair and anger, which the individual experiences for an extended period of time. Oftentimes, those with complicated grief need a little extra help or support during this time.

You might be experiencing complicated grief—and require a little extra help, which you can find in grief counseling at Thriveworks Fort Lauderdale in Broward, FL—if you present the following symptoms for 6 months or longer:

  • You feel completely overwhelmed by emotions
  • Your grief takes over when you’re reminded of your loss
  • You can’t stop thinking about your loss throughout your day
  • You obsess over the loved one’s possessions
  • You’ve made extreme lifestyle changes in response to your loss
  • You engage in rebellious or destructive behavior
  • You feel a deep level of despair on dates associated with the loss
  • You refuse to talk to loved ones about your loss
  • You have become severely fearful of your own death

One might experience complicated grief in a few different ways. If you are experiencing any of the above, be sure to reach out for help. You do not have to go through this alone. A grief counselor at Thriveworks Fort Lauderdale in Broward County, FL can help you manage these symptoms, process your loss, and heal so that you can move forward with your life. I recently switched from "Doctors On Demand" to "Thriveworks." I am seeing both a psychiatrist and a talk therapist. Both have thus far been exceptional. My psychiatrist is thorough in evaluating how medications are effecting me and advising possible alternatives if we need to reconsider a course of action. I appreciate his holistic approach to my treatment, probing how diet and other lifestyle choices may impact my emotional well being. My talk therapist listens carefully to me, shares a central theme that emerges from our session and recommends exercises that help delve deeper into issues that impact my ability to cope and thrive. I amvery happy with their service. Thank you.

Pedro is an excellent clinician who's primary concern is his clients wellbeing. He goes above and beyond to provide the best clinical care for his patients, and creates an individualized treatment plan to help assist with their specific needs. The clinical world is far better off having someone like this practicing in the field.
