What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

Cierra Brabham
Cierra Brabham

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

To prepare for your first individual therapy session, I encourage writing down your thoughts and concerns before your session so that all concerns can be discussed in the intake session. Also, for online therapy, try to make sure that technology is working properly to ensure no disconnections while in online therapy. Do not be nervous; clinicians are here to listen and help.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement family therapy?

Cierra Brabham
Cierra Brabham

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

To supplement therapy, I recommend families dedicate quality time each week without distractions and complete homework assignments from sessions. Practicing communication styles throughout the week and noting any concerns or obstacles for discussion in the next session are also encouraged.

What tools do you teach in couples/marriage counseling?

Cierra Brabham
Cierra Brabham

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

I teach the following tools in couples/marriage counseling:
  • Communication skills: Learn assertive communication to communicate effectively through conflict.
  • Conflict resolution: Learn tips to work through heated discussions without continued aggression.
  • Emotion regulation skills: Learn to process and express emotions healthily.
  • Interpersonal effectiveness skills: Learn skills to help maintain healthy relationships.

What is your go-to approach for anxiety therapy?

Cierra Brabham
Cierra Brabham

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

My go-to approach for helping people in anxiety therapy is to focus on building rapport with the client. It is important that the client feels comfortable when sharing sensitive information. The focus is on the client's main concerns and showing that they are supported. Based on each client's needs, I will choose which treatment is appropriate. I use evidence-based practices such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) to form a treatment plan that is appropriate for the client.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

Cierra Brabham
Cierra Brabham

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

I know a client is making meaningful progress in depression therapy when they are able to successfully navigate challenges on their own with the tools provided in individual therapy. The client starts to recognize and address barriers that keep them in the cycle of their overwhelming symptoms.

What Is the Difference Between Therapy, Counseling, and Psychiatry?

Therapy, provided by our counselors and therapists, addresses emotional and behavioral challenges using therapeutic techniques for mental well-being. Counseling, offered by counselors or therapists, focuses on specific issues and life adjustments, while psychiatry, led by our psychiatric nurse practitioners, involves diagnosing and treating mental health conditions with medication.

What Are the Types of Therapists You Can See?

While availability may vary, at Thriveworks Counseling & Psychiatry Columbia, we offer:

  • Licensed Independent Social Workers – Clinical Practice (LISW-CPs): Specialized in social work and counseling for individuals, families, and groups.
  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs): Focused on relationship and family-related issues.
  • Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs): Trained to offer counseling services for various emotional and mental health issues.

When you connect with a provider at Thriveworks, you’ll be sharing your experience with an industry-leading expert; someone with the experience and professional insight you need to move forward.
