What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in online therapy is to make sure that clients feel comfortable while using online services. I ask that they be in a safe place with no distractions, as it can be easy to get distracted by the environment. Once this is established, I proceed with the session as normal.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

I teach the following tools in online therapy:

  • Distress tolerance skills: Clients learn to manage distress in a healthy way.
  • Stress management skills: Learn strategies to manage life challenges and everyday stress.
  • Mindfulness: Learn to stay in the present moment without judgment when situations seem difficult or out of an individual's control.
  • Emotion regulation skills: Learn to process and express emotions in a healthy way.
  • Interpersonal effectiveness skills: Learn skills to help maintain healthy relationships.
  • Behavioral activation: Treatment for depression to address lack of motivation and feelings of hopelessness, which are common symptoms of depression.
  • Relaxation techniques: Address anxiety by learning breathing techniques and other mindfulness skills.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy when they are able to successfully navigate challenges on their own with the tools provided in individual therapy. The client starts to recognize and address barriers that keep them in the cycle of their overwhelming symptoms.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in individual therapy by building a routine of activities learned in individual therapy. I encourage clients to build a healthy support system for accountability in mental health maintenance.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

To prepare for your first individual therapy session, I encourage writing down your thoughts and concerns before your session so that all concerns can be discussed in the intake session. Also, for online therapy, try to make sure that technology is working properly to ensure no disconnections while in online therapy. Do not be nervous; clinicians are here to listen and help.

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

Our Thriveworks therapists at Thriveworks in Columbia, SC accept most major forms of insurance, which means that many of our clients only pay $0-$50 co-pay per session. However, there are also self-pay options that sit around $200 per session, depending on the service and location, for those who are out-of-network.

Need more help deciding?

The Internet has created countless opportunities to do anything from buying a car to experiencing virtual reality. We shop online, go to school online, work online, game online, date online, and even seek medical treatment online.  It’s increasingly more common for us to look for opportunities to get help or complete a task online instead of in-person.  That’s why online counseling has become the natural choice for so many people seeking mental health support today.

What is Online Counseling?

Online counseling is commonly viewed as any therapy that is delivered by a form of telecommunication. Traditionally, online counseling has been performed via a HIPAA compliant platform that allows the online counselor to interact in real-time, two-way communication by both audio and video.  Online counseling can also be provided by telephone. Today, with the spread of the coronavirus in South Carolina, as well as in other parts of the country, online counseling can be performed by telephone, and is covered by many insurance plans, too.  (803) 477-3736

Benefits of Online Counseling

Online counseling provides the same level of mental health support that clients find in traditional in-person therapy.  Online counselors are bound by the same ethics and practice standards as traditional in-person therapists.  When you meet with an online therapist, you’ll find that your therapist actively listens and is fully engaged in thought with you.  In fact, many people have found it easier to talk with an online therapist.  Online counseling can be done from the privacy of your home or office, so you can pick the environment that feels most comfortable to you.  Plus, there’s no traffic to fight, no parking challenges, no rushing to make it to your appointment on time.

What Does Online Counseling Treat?

Online counseling is a proven method of therapy for treating many types of concerns.  In many cases, the question is not if online counseling can be effective in meeting your needs, it’s more of a personal preference.  Many people have chosen online counseling for its convenience, practicality, and comfort, Plus, Thriveworks Online Counseling in Columbia, SC offers clients the option to do both.  For instance, clients who typically come to the office for therapy find online counseling to be helpful in staying connected with their therapist when they travel for work, are home with a sick child, or need to check in during the holidays.

Thriveworks Columbia Online Counseling offers the following treatment:

  • Online therapy for individuals with depression
  • Anxiety therapy online
  • Online stress management counseling
  • Online marriage counseling

Is Online Counseling Affordable?

You may have wondered, “Is online counseling affordable?”  That’s a great question and the answer is “yes!”  Online counseling more affordable today than ever before.  Many insurance plans cover telehealth for mental health counseling.  Today, in response the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, many insurance companies have approved online counseling for mental health, and some have even waived patient copays, making online counseling affordable and more convenient than ever before.

Thriveworks helped me realize that I do believe people can change. I’m not the person I was three months ago, broken and fearful. I’m healthy and happy and for the first time being kind to myself. Thank you for giving me my life back.
