My career path began in the retail/wholesale industry, which created a path for me in therapy. I’ve worked in roles in ministry, education, and leadership, and have immersed myself in critical race theory, history, and the Black experience. I’ve worked with a wide range of clients of different races, cultures, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Much of my confidence in working with people from all walks of life was inspired by my upbringing. I grew up a military brat, which made me more social and adaptable. I understand trauma does not escape the human experience, but effort and will are the ingredients for healing and transformation.
My approach is rooted in person-centered therapy and CBT, though I have grown into a more eclectic practice that allows for broader interventions and coping strategies. My go-to approach for helping people in online therapy is just as it is for in-person therapy. I typically use a psychodynamic lens. Although it doesn't always explain everything, what goes on in childhood and within the important relationships in early life is often a big part of how we interact with each other and within the world. It is very gratifying to see clients be able to connect the dots and break cycles. On a simpler level, I find that validation and normalizing what someone's feelings connected to an experience are, are super helpful.

I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when they tell me they feel like themselves again. If any goal of any caliber is getting worked towards or accomplished, that is meaningful progress to me.
Focus on self-care! Monitoring sleeping and eating patterns/habits, getting physical exercise, and engaging in mindfulness practices (deep breathing exercises, meditation, etc.) outside of sessions.
To prepare for your first online therapy session, make sure you are in a private space with minimal distractions!

Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.
Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.
There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.
Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.
Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.
At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. When we struggle physically, it’s often apparent. We can’t easily hide a broken arm or symptoms of the flu, and we aren’t expected to. However, when we struggle mentally or emotionally, it isn’t as dramatic; as a result, people do often hide these struggles to the best of their ability.

There are a variety of approaches to online counseling, but here at Thriveworks Baltimore, our online counselors can offer two main options: telephone counseling and video counseling. You might find that both are valuable. Some people, though, develop a preference or have a preference from the very beginning. It often comes down to whether or not you want that face-to-face interaction.
In video counseling, even though you aren’t working with your counselor in-person, you do still get that face-to-face time. Some people prefer this and even find it essential to making progress in counseling. Others, though, find the opposite to be true, in that they feel more comfortable opening up over the phone because there isn’t that face-to-face time. The online counseling at Thriveworks Baltimore are happy to help you either way. Feel free to try one or the other and then make a change if you find that the first option you’ve tried doesn’t work for you!

If you’re debating between in-person and online counseling, you’re probably wondering why you should choose online counseling. While this decision comes down to personal preferences, we think it’s worth considering the perks of online counseling. These include:
The first perk is obvious: Online counseling means you can work with your counselor or therapist from wherever you deem convenient and comfortable. Now, the second online counseling perk is not as obvious. What we mean by more reliable is that in online counseling you don’t have to worry about having to cancel or reschedule your appointment due to traffic (which you can’t control) or bad weather (which again, you can’t control). As long as you have your telephone, computer, or another device ready to go and reliable service or internet connection, you’re all set.
Additionally, schedule an online counseling session often means having more flexible scheduling options. Finally, it’s affordable, as many insurances now cover online counseling by phone and often video, too.
Long story short, online counseling is a great counseling option for many. Not only is it a convenient approach, but it offers greater flexibility and also eliminates external factors that many people just don’t want to deal with, such as a long commute time or traffic.
