Starting Couples therapy

What is couples therapy?

Thriveworks Couples therapy helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. It is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does couples therapy work?

Couples therapy works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular couples therapy sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is couples therapy conducted in person or online?

Couples therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does couples therapy last?

On average, couples attend couples therapy for 12 weeks. However, couples therapy may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.

Couples Therapy in Baltimore, MD—Couples Therapists, Counselors

Relationship issues can cause significant stress on couples and even put a strain on your home life. Despite the fact that they’re common, it doesn’t always make them any easier to deal with. However, if you’re having difficulty resolving a matter on your own, addressing it with a counselor sooner rather than later is a wise choice.

The American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists even advises that the sooner you and your spouse or partner begin counseling, the more likely you are to achieve positive resolution of what’s troubling you. If you see the value in couples therapy, consider reaching out to Thriveworks Baltimore Counseling. We have couples therapists and other relationship experts on our team. These professionals specialize in helping couples work through their particular challenges and also working with them to strengthen the overall relationship.

Addressing Common Relationship Issues in Couples Therapy

Of course, every relationship is going to have its ups and downs as the years pass by. It would be unnatural to assume that you and your spouse are always going to agree on everything. Most of the time, these differences in opinion can be resolved easily between you, but on occasion, you might feel like the problem isn’t going away.

We are delighted to hear that couples who seek our support still feel in love and enjoy a firm bond with one another, but that doesn’t mean you wouldn’t benefit from professional help with an issue such as:

  • Disagreeing on how to raise children
  • Arguing over spending or saving habits
  • Feeling concerned about a partner potentially being unfaithful
  • Struggling with stress from an extended family member
  • Worry about health issues and related expenses
  • Being concerned about a partner overworking or losing their job.

Whatever your specific argument or conflict, our Thriveworks Baltimore couples therapists can step in and help. They can mediate these difficult conversations as well as offer guidance and support.

How Can a Couples Therapist Help Us?

The couples therapists at Thriveworks Baltimore Counseling are here to help couples work through relationship issues, such as those listed above. That said, another main mission of theirs is to help couples further strengthen their relationships and better prepare for future conflicts. The reality is that it’s normal to fight with our partners. It’s about how you fight, or better yet, how you talk about and resolve your problems.

The couples therapists at Thriveworks Baltimore can help you and your partner communicate more effectively, better understand each other’s needs, and more. The tools that they can teach you will ultimately help you and your significant other or spouse to strengthen your overall foundation. Therefore, you don’t have to be struggling with a severe problem to benefit from working with a couples therapist. Here at Thriveworks, we believe that everyone can benefit from working with a mental health professional. And when it comes to couples, that means working with a couples therapist!

In these tense and uncertain times, it’s really helpful to be able to talk to someone who I know shares similar experiences, can understand where I’m coming from, and can help me understand how to do the best I can to improve myself in my circumstances. Tia is a great listener with a gentle, calming demeanor. She knows how to laugh and how to really listen. She’s really helped me through some tough times and encouraged me throughout. Don’t know what I’d do without her!

As first-generation immigrants we have a touch time raising kids in US. Being caught between two different cultures, our teenager daughter intuitively rejects parents' culture and is often unrespectful toward parents and her sibling. But we as parents have no relatives in US for counseling. Talking to Sandra has been very helpful as she instructed us how to communicate with our confused teenager, how to guide her through the difficult time. Thank you, Sandy!
