What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in online therapy is to encourage them to find an area to talk that is private and free from distraction.

My go-to approach for helping people in online therapy is to start by listening to their frustrations, needs, stressors, and feelings and to help them formulate a plan to move toward the life they most want to live. I enjoy having the opportunity to witness the changes people are capable of making in their lives once they start to find their path!

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

I teach the following tools in online therapy: CBT to help with stopping negative thoughts and changing them to positive thoughts, mindfulness exercises to stay in the present moment, and reality testing to help find the facts and remove emotion which can be beneficial to stop overthinking.

After many years of both continuing education and clinical practice, I have the ability to tailor my approach to many client needs, but some of the tools I find many people benefit from learning are:

  • Mindfulness techniques, such as breathing and meditative work to understand and reduce the experience of anxiety
  • Grounding techniques to quiet the mind when our thoughts are overwhelming us
  • Time management techniques to help with executive dysfunction and help get a handle on our complicated lives
  • Communication techniques to assist in helping us feel genuinely connected and supported in our most impactful relationships

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when they complete their homework assignments and share how they used the tools they learned in sessions.

I know a client is making meaningful progress when the things that brought them into therapy are less overwhelming and they are feeling more content, happy, and hopeful about their lives and relationships. This can look different for everyone, but as this occurs, the goal is often to reduce the frequency of therapy sessions in order to continue to provide support to my clients as well as give them the time and space to gain comfort with using the skills they have learned until they are ready to move on from therapy.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in online therapy with recommended books and podcasts.

I encourage clients to supplement their time in online therapy with intentional practices around self-care, communication, reflection, and further learning. For some, this might mean a recommended book or podcast, utilizing a journal or planner, or exploring the resources available in their community (which can be as simple as finding a park or garden to retreat to when feeling overwhelmed). In truth, the real work of therapy happens outside the clinical hour. Helping my clients find ways to really harness their own energy in ways to positively impact their daily lives is just one of the ways I help them move towards their goals!

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

To prepare for your first online therapy session, you can make sure your environment is a place where you can talk freely without distractions and be open.

To prepare for your first online therapy session, it may be best to reflect on what you are hoping will be changed about your life when your therapeutic experience is over. What would be different and why do you feel that would be better? What do you think is holding you back from creating or achieving goals? Or maybe you have been through a painful experience and are seeking to understand how to heal from it. Coming into the first session with this information will allow us to quickly start to form a plan for your therapeutic experience.

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

Need more help deciding?

Every person encounters challenges that they’d rather not have to confront. We develop scary, harmful symptoms of a mental illness that we don’t fully understand; we receive news of a loved one’s sudden passing; we suffer with guilt about decisions we’ve made in the past; we struggle to achieve the level of happiness or fulfillment that we desire.

Your present circumstances don’t determine where you can go;

they merely determine where you start.”

–Nido Qubein

Working through these challenges is hard; there’s no other way around it. However, there is one thing you can do to make it a little easier on yourself… you can work with a therapist, counselor, or psychologist. These mental health professionals specialize in helping people through these problems, and they can help you, too.
