Hear from our clinicians

What is your go-to approach for anxiety therapy?

Richard: My go-to approach for treating anxiety is cognitive behavioral therapy. There is a lot of evidence that CBT is very effective for treating anxiety. With this approach, clients learn ways to reduce and manage their anxiety so they can live more fulfilling lives.

Richard: My go-to approach for working with clients who are suffering from depression is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). I have seen clients benefit greatly from what CBT has to offer.

Matthew: My go-to approach for treating depression is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). I prefer CBT to other modalities for treating depression because it has great empirical support behind its effectiveness for treating depression.

What tools do you teach in anxiety therapy?

Richard: Some of the tools that I teach in therapy are mindfulness techniques, breathing strategies, stress management, cognitive restructuring strategies, and communication skills. With clients who are interested, I also will use exposure therapy strategies to help reduce their anxiety in anxiety-provoking situations.

Richard: I teach a variety of tools when working with clients struggling with depression, such as:

  • Strategies for better recognizing our thoughts, understanding how these impact us, our mood, and our lives.
  • Mindfulness techniques
  • Breathing strategies
  • Stress management
  • Goal setting and problem-solving methods
  • Communication skills

Matthew: I typically start CBT therapy by explaining the cognitive triangle to demonstrate how thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are all connected. Also, having clients identify cognitive distortions that contribute to inaccurate thinking patterns can also be helpful, so they can become more aware of how these patterns can contribute to negative emotions and behaviors.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy?

Richard: I know a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy when they start to believe they can manage their anxiety. They will often report feeling less anxiety and that anxiety has less of an impact on them in their lives.

Richard: I know a client is making meaningful progress when they are feeling better and making the changes they have wanted to make. I observe clients becoming more active and engaged in their lives.

Matthew: I know that clients are making meaningful progress in depression therapy when they become more motivated, start participating in previously enjoyed activities, and become more engaged in life again. Depression can be a debilitating disorder that limits an individual's ability to function like they once did—I know that therapy is successful when clients are back to their old selves and are once again able to engage in life in a meaningful way.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement anxiety therapy?

Richard: Clients can supplement their time in anxiety therapy by practicing the tools and strategies they have learned in sessions. This practice often helps in making faster progress reducing and managing anxiety.

Richard: Clients can supplement their time in counseling by practicing the tools and strategies they have learned in their sessions. This practice often is very helpful in making faster progress.

Matthew: Clients can supplement their time in depression counseling by identifying coping skills that are meaningful and rewarding. If clients are able to push themselves and engage in activities they enjoy, it can impact how they think and feel in a positive way.

What should someone do to prepare for starting anxiety therapy?

Richard: To prepare for you first session, you can think about what you would like to see change in your life as a result of therapy. Knowing some of your goals can help to jump-start the therapy process.

Richard: To prepare for your first session, you can think about what you would like to see change in your life as a result of therapy. Knowing some of your goals can help to “jump start” the therapy process.

Matthew: To prepare for your first depression counseling session, use a journal to identify all the ways your depression has impacted your life. Journaling, or a thought diary, is a technique used in CBT to help raise awareness about thoughts and feelings. Journaling helps individuals track and analyze their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors in a structured way to identify and challenge negative thinking patterns.

Those who haven’t experienced depression sometimes think of it as a period of sadness that you can “just get over.” Unfortunately, depression is a lot more serious than just a bad day. A bad day is something we all experience, but depression is often debilitating, requiring the help of a therapist and occasionally prescription medication to manage.

Experienced, caring Thriveworks Counseling in Worcester depression therapists and anxiety therapists are ready to help you get out from under the dark cloud you’re living under.

Symptoms of Depression and Anxiety

Depression and anxiety are separate disorders, but they often occur together. After a period of anxiety, the person suffering may become depressed about their experience. And if someone has been experiencing depression for a long time, it can cause them to develop anxiety. If you are only experiencing one or the other, they have overlapping symptoms that make it difficult to pin down which disorder you are experiencing without the help of a professional.

  1. Common Symptoms of Anxiety: Symptoms of anxiety include agitation, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, restlessness, irritability, and tension.
  2. Common Symptoms of Depression: Symptoms of depression can include all of the above and a depressed mood, lack of interest in your day to day, low self-esteem, and suicidal ideation. “These symptoms are typically bad enough to cause problems in your daily activities, like work, school, social life, and your relationships,” says Shawn Channell, a Licensed Psychologist at our Worcester office.

Fortunately, the counselors and therapists at Thriveworks Counseling in Worcester can help their clients manage both anxiety and depression. Channell explains how this might work for depression: “There are a variety of different techniques a clinician may use to help clients with depression. One of the most common and effective therapeutic treatments is cognitive-behavioral therapy or CBT. The basic premise of CBT is that our thoughts and attitudes contribute to our depressed mood.” Similarly, our thoughts and attitudes can cause anxiety, which means that CBT can help treat both depression and anxiety.
