Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I have always loved listening to others. When I was growing up, I enjoyed being someone that others felt they could trust and talk about their problems with. I've always liked helping other people figure out solutions to their problems, and I genuinely enjoy listening to peoples' stories about their lives. After finishing my undergraduate degree and taking some time to figure things out, I decided to pursue my Master's Degree in Social Work, because I knew this would be a pathway to a career in which I could help others. This in turn led me to focus on mental health in my fieldwork placement, and that experience helped me figure out that counseling was the path I wanted to pursue.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work best with clients who are willing to be open and honest with me. Therapy is not one-size-fits-all, and healing is often not linear! So, the more information a client can give me about how they are doing and feeling, and what is working or not working in treatment, the better I can adjust the approach we are taking.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I'm most excited to work with clients who are ready for some change in their life. If a client is in a place in life where they are saying, "Something has to give" or "I want to feel better," then they are already experiencing that little initial spark that is going to help transform things.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
That it's important to be kind and patient with yourself in this process - part of therapy is unlearning ways of thinking about and seeing yourself and the world, and this takes practice. Healing is not always going to feel "linear" and that is okay. The most important thing is to keep trying!
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I chose to come practice at Thriveworks because I admired their focus on being accessible to clients and on providing quality care.
What inspires you?
Seeing people overcome their challenges, and seeing people become happier individuals. I've been privileged to witness clients progress from being completely overwhelmed by mental suffering to living full lives and doing things they once did not think they were capable of. Human beings are amazingly resilient.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
In our first session, I will break the ice with you and ask you questions to get to know you and your background better. I will do my best to help you feel comfortable and will answer any questions you might have about therapy. I will also ask some questions to help us identify some treatment goals and what direction we should start going in.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
In a first session with a client, I want them to feel comfortable and that they've been listened to and understood. I want them to leave feeling hopeful about the work that we can accomplish together.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
That I will always take a collaborative approach with you! Yes, as the therapist I come to the table with knowledge and skills to help you, but as the client you ultimately will be the one to do the transformational work.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I love to read, I always have one book that I am reading at any given time! I enjoy doing puzzles, like jigsaw puzzles or sudoku. I like to go for runs outside. And I love to spend time watching New England team games or good movies with my wife and our cat.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
Buddhism has had a large impact on me and how I go through the world. I practice meditation on a daily basis as part of my own self-care. And I do my best to bring mindfulness and ethical action into all areas of my life.
