What is your go-to approach for family therapy?

A go-to approach to family therapy is establishing a safe space to help clients feel comfortable communicating their thoughts, emotions, and concerns and working towards goals collaboratively (i.e. working together rather than against each other). Several ways that this is done are by establishing agreed-upon rules/boundaries at the start of therapy and modeling communication/listening skills that will be utilized in therapy.

What tools do you teach in family therapy?

Below are a number of tools I teach in family therapy:

  • Communication skills
  • Boundary-setting
  • Active/reflective listening skills
  • Thought and emotion identification
  • CBT/DBT skills
  • Mindfulness strategies and coping skills

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in family therapy?

A client is making meaningful progress in family therapy when family members are able to communicate their thoughts and emotions effectively and take the time to fully listen to each other.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement family therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in family therapy with several different options. Individual therapy can help the different members of a family process their thoughts and emotions in their own space to help improve their ability to communicate those thoughts and emotions with others. Clients can also practice the skills they learn over the course of family therapy in their daily lives. Clients can ask their clinician for homework assignments/worksheets/resources to help them build their skills outside of therapy as well.

What should someone do to prepare for starting family therapy?

There are a number of steps that an individual can take to prepare for their first family therapy session. For one, an individual can reflect on what their goals would be for family therapy. What specific issues or concerns does the individual have that they would want to address? If a person is having difficulty motivating other individuals in the family to start family therapy, try practicing patience, empathize with their concerns, and if possible, emphasize how family therapy may be helpful from their perspective to resolve concerns that they have about the family dynamic.

Starting Family therapy

What is family therapy?

Family therapy helps families resolve conflicts and strengthen their relationships. It is led by qualified mental health professionals like psychologists, licensed professional counselors (LPCs), and licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) who have extensive training in family dynamics and group communication.

How does family therapy work?

Thriveworks family therapists in Worcester, MA usually begin by asking what everyone’s goals are for family counseling. Family members may need help with very specific issues or with general relationship functioning. But there are three main purposes in family counseling: to educate, to counsel, and to strengthen. Thriveworks also offers online family therapy and in-person services, so you may all meet in an office together or join a video call from your home depending on everyone’s location and availability.

What is the most effective family therapy?

The most effective form of Family therapy will often depend on the family itself, as there are many types of family therapy for therapists to use as they see fit in order to best meet the needs of their clients. However, one of the most commonly used types of family therapy is structural family therapy (SFT). SFT focuses specifically on family dynamics and interactions, looking at how they shape the relationships and structure present in the family. It can be effectively used to treat a variety of concerns.

How do I know if my family needs therapy?

This answer often looks different to each family that starts family therapy. However, some signs that your family might need to consider family counseling include frequent fights or misunderstandings, constant tension, experiencing loss, behavioral issues, marital issues, divorce, and blended family issues, among others.

What is included in family therapy?

In family therapy, therapists will often start by asking questions and assessing individual and family dynamics. From there, they may employ therapeutic techniques such as structured family therapy, CBT, strategic family therapy, and more depending on the present concerns and conflicts. From there, a therapist will work to open lines of communication between family members and facilitate emotional healing and growth.

What is the success rate of family therapy?

Family therapy can be incredibly successful, with some studies reporting a success rate of almost 90% for improving participants’ emotional and mental health, and around 66% for improving their physical health.

Is family therapy conducted in person or online?

Thriveworks therapists in Worcester, MA offer both online family therapy and in-person family therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does family therapy last?

Family therapy is usually short term and solution-focused, with most families accomplishing their goals in 12 sessions or fewer. However, it can also last for longer if the probles at hand are more complex — and that’s okay, too.

I have been very happy with the counseling I have received. Jason is a down to earth person. I like him on a personal and professional level. He is a good listener and understands my challenges. He has offered techniques to help me identify my anxieties before they have a chance to affect my behavior. He has introduced me to Cognitive Behavioral therapy as one of the tools I may find useful to effect change. I have made improvements in my behavior as a result of Jason's counseling.

I have the privilege of working with Jamie (Coonan) Bruce for the past 4 months+ and have gained a sense of peace and equilibrium by doing so. Jamie has guided me to create a thriving daily practice of serenity and peace even in my own fragmented chaotic times along with the insane chaotic times in the world presently. I feel my relationship with her has led me to an understanding of my past trauma that is beneficial in my growth and connection with family and others. As we resolve past issues, it is gently ushering in a new skill set. I am better able to manage the fluctuating moods and emotions enhancing my coping skills. Jamie's experience with PTSD for so many years is a blessing for me as I live with hypervigilance day in and day out. I have been able to better manage my anxiety and I am learning how to manage my pent up anger making fluid, acceptable and letting it go. I feel blessed that I found Jamie to work with and am grateful for her teaching, listening and presence.

I have been seeing Jeffrey White for four months now, to deal with longstanding issues related to a traumatic childhood. He has taught me so much about how trauma affects the body and mind and how to change that. That education, along with his compassion and encouragement have helped me get to a place of calm and confidence that would have seemed impossible to me before starting therapy. I'm so grateful for his help - it's been transformational for me.

I have been a client of Jeffrey White from Thriveworks for a few months now. We meet weekly and after each session I feel educated and heard. His ability to hold space for me is recognized and appreciated ten fold. Our sessions involve a combination of therapy and coaching, and I couldn't ask for someone better to just listen to me and provide objective feedback. If you are looking for an educated, thoughtful, and inspirational therapist, Jeff White is your person.
