How to Thrive – Therapists and Counselors in Reading, PA

It is our goal at Thriveworks-Reading to help you “thrive.” Thrive means to “grow vigorously or flourish.” But how can you thrive in today’s world?

How Does a Garden Grow?

To help you understand how to thrive and flourish in life, we need to first understand how a simple garden grows and then learn from it. Thriving in life has many of the same fundamental principles that are needed to have a thriving and hearty garden. If you research basic gardening tips, you will find the following most important recommendations: know your plants, manage the environment, and tend the garden. So how can we apply these basic principles to our lives to help us thrive? Let’s break them down.

Know Your Self

One of the most basic principles of having a garden thrive is to know the plants. Some plants are perennials and some are annuals. Some plants need direct sunlight, partial sunlight, or shade; and some plants need a lot of water and some very little. Each plant needs a different kind of soil and thrives in different terrains. Each plant looks different, feels different, and smells different.

How can we apply this to ourselves?

Simple: know yourself. Know your strengths and weaknesses. Know what your personality is like and under what kind of circumstances do you thrive? This cannot be overstated enough and can make all the difference between thriving and withering.

Manage the Environment

Another basic principle is that all plants need nutrients. They all need water, food, and sunlight. However, as stated before, each plant is unique. Some plants thrive in droughts, some thrive in torrential downpours, and some need extra special care. You cannot put all plants in the same environment because they are just not made the same way. Know the plant, which environment it will thrive in, and which special combination of nutrients it needs. Place the plant in the most beneficial environment for that particular plant.

Manage your environment. Make sure you have your basic needs met such as water, food, and shelter. Make sure you get enough sunlight and get outside. Make sure are giving yourself enough nutrients that help you thrive such as eating healthy. Add other nutrients and support to your life such as family, friends, education, work, recreation, and spirituality. Keep yourself away from destructive environments. Know yourself and place yourself in environments that will encourage you to flourish.

Take Care of Yourself

Any thriving garden can easily be overtaken by weeds and others animals if not taken care of regularly. If not properly tended to, plants can dry up, get diseases, suffocate, wither, and die. It’s always sad to see a garden overgrown and not taken care of because you know the beauty that lies within.

The same is with us. Make sure that you take time to tend to your life, get enough rest, take care of yourself, and do something special for yourself. It is also important to prune things out of your life that are causing you harm such as destructive relationships, friends, addictions, and emotional and psychological problems.

A Note on Storms

Bad weather can happen suddenly. Sometimes storms are fun and exciting to watch, especially from a distance. But none of us like it when the black cloud and rain seem to hang around us for several days. It gets downright depressing. However, many plants need the additional rain to grow, especially if there has been a drought.

Sometimes there are storms in our lives and the black cloud seems to hang around for a long time. Sometimes these storms feel more like hurricanes or even tornadoes. You feel like you are drowning. When will the storm pass? How much more of the high winds and pressure can you take?

You feel like you’ve been waiting forever. However, there is nothing like the feeling of when the sun finally comes out, especially if there is a rainbow. The storm seems almost worth it. Although we don’t like it when storms come in our lives, it is usually only after them that we can grow, flourish, and see the beauty in life. In order to thrive, you need to make the most out of the storms in your life.
