My go-to approach for helping people in anger management counseling is to help them to learn to pause when stressed. I find the best benefit in this because it empowers people with anger issues to have more choice over how they will respond to a frustration. I then help them to identify more constructive ways to respond to likely frustrations.
I teach the following tools in anger management counseling:
I know a client is making meaningful progress in anger management counseling when they are able to report becoming frustrated with someone without blowing up at them.
Clients can supplement their time in anger management counseling with identifying whenever they become frustrated and practicing pausing rather than simply reacting with rage.
To prepare for their first anger management counseling session, an individual can identify the three biggest stressors in their life.
Yes, there are therapists who help with anger via Anger management therapy. It’s a therapeutic process that an individual goes through to manage their anger and identify its triggers. They’re given clear instructions on how to improve their angry behavior as well as a safe space for opening up about their emotions.
Once an individual’s triggers are identified, anger management therapy focuses on helping the individual process and respond to these emotions in a more positive and productive manner. The anger management therapist will provide coping strategies and ultimately help their client take back control of their anger.
The five keys to mastering anger include identifying triggers, pausing before reacting, calmly expressing emotions, discovering constructive outlets for frustration, and seeking professional assistance if necessary. Acquiring these skills through Anger management therapy empowers individuals to effectively manage and navigate their anger.
The best therapy for anger management often involves cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which helps individuals identify and change patterns of thinking and behavior related to anger.
Anger management therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.
Often, Anger management therapy lasts between 4-6 weeks. However, it can last longer, dependent on the individual’s needs.
Do you feel that you or a loved one has an anger problem? Call Thriveworks Reading-Wyomissing to find out. We have counselors and coaches that can help. Most likely if you feel that you have a problem; you usually do. Don’t feel alone and out of control any longer.
Anger can be a spectrum of emotions from mildly irritated, to moderately annoyed, to intense rage. It is a basic emotion that comes with biological and physiological changes such as increased blood pressure and heart rate. Your body also releases hormones such as adrenaline.
Many things can cause anger. Anger can be triggered internally or externally. For example, if you are experiencing anxiety, depression, or even substance use, you may experience biological changes that make you feel more irritable. However, anger can also be triggered by your environment or something that happens to you. Sometimes, it is not necessarily the event that triggers the anger, but your thoughts about the event that contribute to the anger and ultimately your actions.
Anger is normal. Anger is healthy. Everyone experiences it. What is problematic is when the emotion of anger is so strong that you lose control of your emotions and harm others or are destructive in some way. Do you ever feel that you have lost control over your emotions or do others feel frightened by your behavior? Problems with anger can lead to problems at home, school, work, or in the community. Some people have lost relationships, jobs, and even their freedom because of lack of control over this emotion. It can impact your quality of life.
Anger management counseling and cognitive behavioral therapy at Thriveworks-Reading can help you identify your anger triggers, learn to identify how your thoughts impact your feelings and actions, and learn different strategies and techniques to control your emotions.
