I am a firm believer that therapy is for everyone. Therapists aren’t magicians. We are simply trained to use and share a broad “tool box” of skills for managing life’s problems. Therapy is hard work, but should result in you building your skills and capacity to manage whatever life has thrown your way.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with extensive experience working with individuals and families of all ages. I identify as a Cognitive-Behavioral Therapist, but as a Social Worker I frame all of my work by exploring how individuals exist within their family and community systems.

I am a compassionate and caring therapist who has worked on the “business side” of behavioral health for years. As such, you will find me to be a warm, easy to talk to clinician with a results orientation. I have significant experience treating individuals with trauma-exposure, attachment issues, eating disorders, and physical symptoms stemming from emotional states. I will see adults and adolescents for individual sessions, and provide family therapy for young people 14 and below.

If you are reading this, you may be someplace on your journey working towards personal development and possibly moving through a difficult point in life.

My style is to establish a trusting alliance with my client, empowering them to create their goals and use my expertise to work with them through their process.  Being strengths- based, nonjudgmental and goal focused, I will use a therapeutic technique that best fits your needs and style, prioritizing safety and self-determination.  Some techniques I use include cognitive therapy, motivational interviewing, supportive therapy, and play therapy.

I work with a wide range of clients, ages 5 and up, including adolescents, young adults, mature adults, families and individuals, in English and Spanish. I work with those struggling with a range of symptoms including depression, anxiety, trauma, ADHD, work/ life balance, transitional challenges, and relationship issues.

I am an experienced clinical social worker, and a Level 2 Reiki Practitioner in Traditional Usui Reiki.  I received my Bachelor of Science in Child and Family Studies, with concentrations in African American Studies, Child Development and Spanish, from Syracuse University. My Masters in Social Work, Advance Generalist Practice, was earned at CUNY Lehman College in the Bronx, NY. Additional training was completed in dual diagnosis through Columbia University.

I'm a licensed professional counselor in the state of Pennsylvania as well as a registered art therapist. I earned a master's degree in art therapy and counseling from Drexel University and have practiced in a number of mental health settings. I have experience working with clients who present with diverse clinical issues, including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and substance use. I believe psychotherapy is a collaborative effort, in which the therapist supports client strengths and insights as a means of eliciting change. I intend to offer compassionate, affirming care which provides opportunities to challenge old patterns and to build new interpersonal skills. I also offer arts-based interventions if that feels like something which would be helpful for you (and no, you don't have to be an artist!).

I look forward to working with you!

Robert has enjoyed working with adolescents and adults in helping them live with a variety of challenges including depression, anxiety, physical/psychological trauma, psychosis, personality disorders, anger, relationship problems, life transitions, grief and many others. Robert employs a psychodynamic approach to conceptualizing problems and a Client-Centered approach to building therapeutic rapport. While Robert uses several different models for change he often draws from Cognitive Therapy and Motivational Interviewing but treatment will be personalized for your needs.

The foundation for Robert’s work is the belief that we were built for relationships and as a result the relationship between therapist and person-in-therapy is the vehicle for change. Providing a warm, non-judgmental space in which people feel secure is priority number one. Where you go from there is completely up to you!

Maurice Denton, LPC

Hello! My name is Maurice Denton.

I began my study of psychology in 11th grade when given the choice between it and German. While German is an interesting language, I think I made the right choice. Since then, I graduated with a BA in Psychology from Eastern University and then a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Regent University. I’ve been employed in the helping field for most of my working life. I’ve continued in this field because I love being a support for people as they work through life challenges, and having overcome my share of major difficulties, I’m not afraid to sit with you and work through heavy issues. I consider the people that I work with to be participants, not only clients, because we’re working together to find pathways to problem solving. You’re in the driver seat and your goals will be our focus.

I believe in taking a person centered approach to therapy, which sees my participants as autonomous, capable of changing their lives in positive ways, and moving toward their full potential. Since being trained as a Clinical Mental Health Counselor, I have walked with participants through the most severe cases of anxiety, depression, Bi-Polar disorder, Schizophrenia, and other chronic life interruptions.  I always consider it an honor and a privilege when my clients share with me, the life experiences that have brought them to their current place, whatever that may be. I believe that you are a valuable individual, no matter what you’re dealing with, and that you don’t have to carry the weight of your concerns alone.

Since obtaining her masters, Alexis has worked with children, adolescents, adults, and families who are dealing with any number of mental health concerns. Whether it be in a school, community and home based work, or in an outpatient office; Alexis has committed herself to meeting each individual where they’re at mentally and emotionally. Whether it is working through a difficult life transition, chronic anxiety or depression, grief, body image and self esteem, eating disorders or anything else that is keeping you from living the life you want to; she believes in working with you and tailoring treatment to meet your unique needs.

Alexis feels strongly about “buying in” to therapy and working as a team to overcome whatever it is each person is dealing with. She believes deeply in connections and her warm approach will help to put you at ease so you can get the support and care that is right for you.

I joined Thriveworks with a desire to work collaboratively with individuals, couples, and families in an effort to embrace change, process life events, and further personal growth and development. The therapeutic relationship provides an opportunity to learn more fully about one’s self and it is a privilege for me to be able to embark on that journey and help influence an individual’s ability to experience transformation and gain increased satisfaction in life. It is my privilege to join clients on this journey.

My areas of specialization include trauma, depression, anxiety, anger management, trauma, healthy sexual development, relationship discord, conflict resolution, loss and grief, and effective communication styles.

My counseling style is eclectic as I acknowledge the unique characteristics that are present within the many approaches to therapy. This allows for the use of the most appropriate tools as the therapeutic relationship evolves and allows adaption to honor the distinct and dynamic human being.. Many of the hours I have spent in professional development have been focused on cognitive behavioral treatment approaches and dialectical behavioral therapy.

Lavonda Handy, LMFT

Lavonda Handy has a master’s in clinical psychology from La Salle University and is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She has an extensive background of over 10 years working with children, families, couples and individuals.

Through her experience, she has learned the importance of the connection that we have to others and how it impacts the healing of an individual. Often times, feelings of depression, anxiety, and difficulties within relationships with others are derived from previous experiences/traumas that cause us to be “stuck” in unhealthy patterns of living. Lavonda believes in connecting with each client through exploring their current living patterns that have them in unhealthy relationships, making poor decisions or struggling to maintain daily living. She works collaboratively with clients to create new patterns in their relationships and life to get “unstuck”.

Lavonda believes once you have been able to explore your past relationships/traumas, you will be able to begin healing from past hurts, connect more with your authentic self and work towards improving your current and future relationships.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and Board Certified Art Therapist. I completed my master’s degree of Marriage and Family Therapy and Art Therapy at Notre Dame de Namur University in 2017. I work with a variety of issues that include but are not limited to depression, anxiety, self-esteem, grief & loss, mood and personality disorders, trauma and PTSD, and have a specialty working with those with eating disorders.

I use an existential and humanistic approach to therapy, and pride myself on helping facilitate a safe therapeutic space for clients. I believe that when you establish a sense of safety you can then start moving forward in exploring what it means to be your authentic self, as well as challenge patterns of behaviors that have been ineffective in allowing you to live the life you want. I use methods such as CBT, DBT, mindfulness, and art therapy in my sessions. We will create and review goals together in each session to ensure that we are helping you move in the direction that you want.

Thomas McDowell, LPC

First, let me assure you that reaching out for help is one of the most courageous and insight-driven steps that any person can take in their life, despite how fearful and confusing it may seem; I admire you for making it this far.

My name is TJ McDowell and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor practicing both online and in-person in the state of Pennsylvania. I have worked in behavioral and mental health now for over 8 years in a variety of settings and different roles, with the last several years of experience focused mainly in individual therapy. I have developed proficiency in theories including Existential & Person-Centered counseling as well as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques and an expertise in Motivational Interviewing.

I believe in the human heart's and mind's abilities to heal themselves through meaningful, reflective, and validating conversation; though I also understand there is a time to pick up a pen and do the realistic work of setting goals and solving practical problems. It is my experience that most satisfying counseling experiences are typically a dynamic blend of both of these styles of approach. In our working relationship, you will have the freedom to guide and decide what's best for you.

Let me offer a quick glimpse into what inspires me:

As someone who does not ascribe to a particular faith, many are surprised to hear that my credentials come from a Pastoral Care and Counseling degree. I am personally and professionally fascinated by the ways that we as humans integrate into our lives that which is most precious and meaningful. Regardless of affiliation with a religious faith or a total lack thereof, I believe that as humans it is an essential part of our growth and personal fulfillment to embrace those things which some may call "spiritual." For example- my bachelor's degree is in Physics, and a deep reverence for the natural world and universe is something I carry with me in daily life. In this sense, when I look at pictures of Saturn and its rings & moons that I took with a telescope back then, I am filled with a sense of wonder and connection to something bigger than myself.

Let me just reiterate how impressive it is that you have made it this far. Counseling can be brief and solution focused, longer and more existential & creative, or a place to go when you don't know what you want but you just have a vague sense that something about life isn't right. I have worked with many people in all of these stages of searching for help, and I am confident that I can be of service to you in your journey and look forward to getting to know you.

Myriam Rosefort, LCSW

In my work experience of 20 years in the human service field; I have gained my experience in a variety of settings which includes outpatient mental health facilities, in homes, schools, residential programs, and within the community.

My counseling style is to take on a holistic and eclectic approach. I’m a firm believer that it is important to meet clients where they are at and to be culturally sensitive. I take great pride in assuring my clients that this is a safe place where they can vent, express themselves, feel validated, and not be judged. I believe in taking on a positive approach and focusing on the client’s strength to give them a since of empowerment and encouragement. My therapeutic style is flexible and it’s not a one size fits all. I approach each family, couple, or individual with warmth, compassion, respect, and openness while working together to collaboratively to help with meeting target goals.

I have worked with individuals, families, children, and adults coping with a variety of issues including ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), autism, oppositional defiant disorder, depression, attachment disorders, personality disorders, parental conflicts, anxiety, trauma, abuse, struggle with adjustment, struggle with coping with caring for a special needs child, and a wide range of problems.

Until we learn to feel, to acknowledge, to cope and start the healing of our unresolved pain and struggles, we remain stagnant in discovering the best versions of ourselves.  There is strength in making the choice to seek out help, to start the healing process, and you deserve it. I am open and ready to help.

The path I took to work as a counselor at Thriveworks is a rather straightforward one. I have had an interest in helping others with feelings or emotions since as far back as I can remember. When family or teachers would notice this interest, they would tell me that I may want to look into psychology.  It wasn’t until high school when I was able to take a class in the subject. What I learned in that class ignited my interest in the field and so I chose my major before even applying to colleges. Before graduating from Chestnut Hill College with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, I had already enrolled in LaSalle’s master’s in professional counseling psychology program. Since graduating in 2012, I have provided treatment to a variety of populations in the city of Philadelphia.

I specialize in cognitive behavioral therapy and family therapy with a focus on communication. I have worked with children, adolescents, and adults, in the home, school, and office setting. I have extensive experience working with people with autism and Asperger’s syndrome. I highly enjoy working with people who are experiencing anxiety and depression and trauma-informed care is paramount to my practice. I am an LGBTQIA+ friendly counselor and welcome the opportunity to be an agent of change and healing to any interested client.

Moncrief and I have been providing therapeutic services to clients in the Philadelphia area since 2010.  I obtained my PhD from Drexel University in the field of Couple and Family Therapy in 2017.  As a psychotherapist, I understand the decision to enter psychotherapy can be extremely challenging for some individuals.  Thus, I strive to meet individuals where they are in the therapeutic process.   This process involves helping individuals explore the root of their difficulties/road blocks and assisting them with creating a roadmap that will lead to a more fulfilling and enjoyable life.  I am a trauma- informed therapist with specialization in the areas of: self-esteem, marital and familial conflict, sexual abuse, transgenerational trauma, divorce, adolescent challenges, and parenting.  I offer services to adults, adolescents, couples, and families.  As an African American woman, I have a grave understanding of the trials and tribulations individuals of color face in today's society.  I believe race, ethnicity, culture, and social economical factors play a pivotal role in how individuals live their daily lives and I invite discussion of such factors in the therapeutic process.

In this day and age it is so hard to be seen and heard, to know if we are “normal” and “fit in with society.”  If you are having issues navigating troubled thoughts, unmotivated to reach your goals, concerns with substance abuse, or relationship/ marriage problems, I would love the opportunity to work with you.  I meet clients where they are and identify what concerns have brought you to therapy. We come up with a plan together to help you reach your goals in therapy. I have experience working with individual clients, couples, adolescents and young children. I use multiple interventions and identify those specifically to meet each clients needs.

A little about myself, my education concentrated on counseling and I earned a Masters in Social work and Education in Human Sexuality.  Where I focused on identified sexual functioning issues, and working with relationship problems with couples primarily concentrating on sexual concerns. In addition my education focused on working with the LGBTQIA populations.   I worked extensively with clients who have experienced trauma, PTSD, parenting and issues with children. I have experience running women’s groups, sex education, early recovery, and couples groups. My theoretical orientation is psycho dynamic, ego psych, family systems therapy.  I use interventions such as CBT, DBT, motivational interviewing, trauma informed and strength based. I currently hold my LCSW in the state of PA and have been working and living with my family in the Center City area since 2015.

Abraham Kou, LPC, CAADC

Hi there, my name is Abraham Kou. I completed a master's degree in Professional Counseling from the University of Pennsylvania and I'm currently a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Pennsylvania Board Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CAADC) who provides therapy to individual adults.

My areas of specialization are: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD), substance use problems, social anxiety, grief and loss, self-harm, and Bipolar and Related Disorders. Most of my past professional experience has been with adults in residential drug and alcohol treatment, outpatient/intensive outpatient methadone maintenance therapy, and remote crisis counseling.

In regards to my approach, I think that therapy is about building a safe relationship and meeting you where you're at. When we sit down together, it's really whatever you want to make it. For some people it's a structured type of therapy. Others might free flow and talk about what's on their mind. Maybe it's some combination of both. There's no wrong way to do therapy. Wherever we land, meetings are very conversational and I ask plenty of questions to help examine what role trauma may have had in developing presenting challenges. I also highlight how early and current relationships shape the ways that we experience the world using attachment theory.

Overall, I believe that building self-awareness into our past and present helps us change our future behavior. In doing this, I draw from multiple approaches to help offer relief, though I tend to incorporate a lot of mindfulness-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in our time together.
