What is your go-to approach for individual therapy?

My approach to helping people in individual therapy is eclectic, as every person's needs are different and can be met with many different approaches. Individual therapy is a joint process and unbiased based on open communication within a supportive setting. I prefer to use a variety of styles and creativity to help one navigate their personal journey, such as visuals, handouts, and book recommendations. When I work with children and teens, I like to use play therapy, creative arts, and visual modalities such as media and whiteboard if using telehealth.

What tools do you teach in individual therapy?

I teach the following tools in individual therapy:

  • Communication skills
  • Assertiveness/boundaries
  • Cognitive restructuring
  • Self-awareness
  • Problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Improved motivation

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy?

Progress in therapy is more than just a feeling; it is about behavioral and well-being changes, such as an increased positive mood, fewer symptoms of conditions such as depression, having better ways to manage anxiety or triggers, adjusting goals and objectives, or feedback in sessions; you will be more aware of your feelings, emotions, actions, and decisions as you live your life.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement individual therapy?

In between sessions, I encourage and stress the importance of self-care, attending groups, nature therapy, using writing as an outlet, and reading specific articles to help provide support around concerns clients are presenting with in therapy.

What should someone do to prepare for starting individual therapy?

To prepare for your first individual session, you can congratulate yourself for taking steps to continue to be the best version of you! Determine the reasons for seeking or your purpose for starting therapy. Don’t be too worried about knowing what to say, as you will be able to provide insight during the intake process. Dress for comfort, don't be afraid to ask your therapist questions, understand you may become emotional and cry, and prepare time before and after your session to process and relieve unnecessary stress.

Individual therapy FAQs

What is individual therapy?

Individual therapy, also known as Individual therapy, allows people to engage in private sessions with a skilled therapist, counselor, or psychologist. The core objective of individual therapy is to establish a secure and confidential setting where you can openly discuss whatever emotional, psychological, or behavioral challenges you face. Through these one-on-one sessions, the client and therapist work together to delve into, comprehend, and ultimately find solutions for the issues at hand in their life.

How does individual therapy work?

Individual therapy unfolds in a structured process, commencing with an initial assessment in which the therapist gathers essential information about your history, concerns, and objectives. Together, you and your therapist collaboratively establish specific, attainable goals for your sessions, which can encompass symptom alleviation, personal development, or finding solutions to particular challenges.

I absolutely love working with Christina. She makes me feel good after every session. She is super thorough in her techniques and clear with communication. I also love that she takes notes throughout our session and is able to pick up on things that I say so we can discuss more about them and why I said it. She gives me confidence in my mental health.

I have seen many mental health providers the last 15 years. No one else I have seen has been as patient, knowledgeable, nor cared as much. I feel as though I have grown more in the last year than I have across my whole life.

I appreciate availability the most. Whenever I’m in need of service my therapist is an email or call away. There have been times when I was in immediate need because of serious life circumstances, she always made time for me and for that I’m eternally grateful.
