What is your go-to approach for individual therapy?

Christopher: My go-to approach for helping people in individual therapy is empowering self.

Katya: My go-to approach is to create self-awareness and cultivate support in independently making the desired changes. I find that the best benefit of self-awareness is regaining agency over our decisions because it is a consistently replicable skill.

What tools do you teach in individual therapy?

Christopher: I use mindfulness, motivational interviewing, CBT, and DBT skills throughout therapy

Katya: I teach the following tools in individual therapy:

  • Catching the “shoulds”: “Should” is casually used in language, but is judgmental language that denies agency over choices and actions. By catching them, we can mindfully evaluate our wants and then deliberately proceed with next steps.
  • Regulation: Managing a heightened emotional state is complicated. Learning to regulate our bodies is more manageable. One cannot have a calm body and an overwhelmed mind at the same time.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy?

Christopher: I know a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy when they consistently utilize their learned tools/skills.

Katya: I know clients are making meaningful progress when they are applying the skills I taught them and do not react to situations in dysregulated ways.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement individual therapy?

Christopher: Clients can supplement their time in individual therapy with daily self-reflection.

Katya: Clients need to practice therapeutic skills in everyday day life. One cannot learn to sail in a storm.

What should someone do to prepare for starting individual therapy?

Christopher: To prepare for your first individual therapy session, you can identify daily challenges.

Katya: Relax! We get to interview each other, and my job is to get to know you, not judge you.

Starting Individual therapy

What is individual therapy?

Individual therapy, also known as Individual therapy, allows people to engage in private sessions with a skilled therapist, counselor, or psychologist. The core objective of individual therapy is to establish a secure and confidential setting where you can openly discuss whatever emotional, psychological, or behavioral challenges you face. Through these one-on-one sessions, the client and therapist work together to delve into, comprehend, and ultimately find solutions for the issues at hand in their life.

How does individual therapy work?

Individual therapy unfolds in a structured process, commencing with an initial assessment in which the therapist gathers essential information about your history, concerns, and objectives. Together, you and your therapist collaboratively establish specific, attainable goals for your sessions, which can encompass symptom alleviation, personal development, or finding solutions to particular challenges.

Can individual therapy help me?

Yes, individual therapy, also known as Individual therapy, at Thriveworks can help you to improve your mental health and overall quality of life.

Is individual therapy conducted in person or online?

Christine is a great therapist that regularly gives me 'brain-expanding' ways of thinking and dealing with anxiety. My anxiety has changed and lessened so significantly since I started seeing her and I always look forward to sessions.

This has been my first time in therapy inspite of years of recognizing I could probably benefit from therapy. I'm sure we all initially come to therapy with our own preconceptions and a sense of 'what should I expect?' I even left my first couple of appointments wondering, 'Did I do that right?' But despite those reservations I immediately felt at ease sharing with Marina. I genuinely don't know how exactly she did it, but she was able to very quickly establish a rapport with me that's allowed me to open up in ways I wasn't sure I'd be able to. I've often finished a session and said to my partner, 'I love therapy'. That sense of being lighter and feeling heard and seen is the part of therapy I've appreciated the most.

Danielle is incredibly helpful in me understanding my diagnosis and recognizing destructive thought patterns. I quite honestly would be in a much worse mental state if I did not have the input and guidance that Danielle has provided. I appreciate her knowledge and expertise when it comes to understanding anxiety and the triggers that may cause it.
