To prepare for your first online therapy session, you can identify daily challenges.

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

Need more help deciding?

If you’re interested in working with a counselor, but you haven’t been able to find the time, online therapy is the solution. Online counseling makes attending your session easier, as you can work with your therapist or counselor from virtually anywhere. You don’t have to hustle to their office after work or leave the comfort of your home to go to therapy—you can go to online therapy instead!

your journey. They don’t need to, it’s not for them.”

What Is Online Therapy?

Online therapy is just as it sounds: It’s therapy, that you attend online! Instead of meeting with your therapist in person, you meet with them over the phone, video conference, email or text message. This is a convenient alternative to in-person therapy, as it allows people to attend their therapy session from virtually anywhere they choose. If you value that face-to-face interaction in in-person therapy, online video conferences might be the right online therapy option for you. If, on the other hand, you’d rather remain anonymous or engage in an even more flexible form of therapy, email/text message therapy might be the best choice.

Regardless of which approach you choose, you can find value in online therapy. Research shows that online therapy can prove just as effective as in-person counseling. In addition, it is a reliable option. You don’t have to worry about missing your appointment and having to reschedule because you’re sick or because the weather is bad. External factors don’t get in your way of attending your online therapy session. Just make sure you have reliable Wi-Fi or internet!

Who Can Benefit from Online Therapy?

Online therapy can benefit people of all backgrounds. It offers comfort, convenience, flexibility, anonymity, and more. These benefits and essential aspects of online therapy prove to solve many problems people face when looking for mental health services. For example, someone who is looking for a therapist with flexible appointment times can find the right solution in online therapy. Additionally, someone who would like to keep their identity or decision to attend therapy private can also find the right solution in online therapy. Here are a few people who can benefit from online therapy:

  1. Jess is seriously considering quitting her job and jumping into a new career journey. She knows that she could benefit from an unbiased opinion, not to mention some guidance on the matter—but her current work schedule doesn’t allow her enough time to make it to the local therapist’s office, have her 60-minute session, and drive back to work or home.
  2. John and Margaret are contemplating divorce. They aren’t sure that they’re capable of working through their current challenges and they’re both suffering as a result. They want to work with a counselor to see if there’s anything worth salvaging, but the local therapy office is closed by the time they’re both available.
  3. Matt lives in a small town where everybody knows everybody. He knows that someone will see him walk into the local therapy office, and then by the same time tomorrow, everyone will know he’s working with a therapist. Matt would rather keep his decision to attend therapy private.

In each instance above, online therapy is a great option for therapy. It allows Jess to talk to a counselor or life coach about her career options; it enables John and Margaret to give their marriage a fair shot by working with a therapist at a time that works for everybody; and it allows Matt to attend his therapy sessions without sharing this personal experience with his entire community.

My husband and I worked with Emily for a few months and her guidance had really made a difference in our marriage. In fact, my husband was skeptical about couples counseling initially, but really came to value it after a few sessions; the only reason we stopped was because our insurance changed. Both of us found Emily to be a compassionate and fair listener who recommended concrete tools and practices for us that turned out to be quite helpful.
