Starting Stress management therapy

What type of therapy do I need for stress?

Thriveworks offers Stress management therapy, a type of therapy that helps people learn how to effectively manage and release their stress through the use of relaxation techniques, time-management practices, and mindfulness, among others. Relieving stress can greatly improve an individual's mental health, as stress can detrimentally affect one's emotional and physical well-being.

How does stress management therapy work?

Stress management therapy functions by identifying the source(s) of stress and the thoughts, emotions, and experiences that are tied to it, then addressing them and creating healthy strategies for dealing with stress on a long-term basis. Additionally, Stress management therapy also helps people discover what warning signs they have that can let them know that they are stressed so that they can be more proactive in managing it.

What is the most effective therapy for stress management?

The effectiveness of stress management therapy can vary from person to person, but some widely used and effective approaches include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), and relaxation techniques.

What are 5 stress management strategies?

5 stress management counseling strategies include:

  • Deep breathing: Practice deep, slow breathing exercises to calm your body's stress response.
  • Exercise: Regular physical activity can help reduce stress and improve your overall well-being.
  • Mindfulness meditation: Engage in mindfulness or meditation practices to stay present and reduce anxiety.
  • Time management: Organize your tasks and priorities to minimize stress related to time pressures.
  • Social support: Share your feelings and concerns with friends or a therapist for emotional support and problem-solving.

Should you go to therapy for stress?

Whether to seek therapy for stress depends on the severity and impact of the stress on your life. If stress is significantly affecting your well-being, relationships, or daily functioning, therapy can be a helpful option to learn coping strategies and gain support. It's important to assess your own needs and consult a mental health professional for guidance on whether therapy is appropriate for your situation.

Does stress management help anxiety?

Yes, stress management counseling can help significantly reduce the amount of stress that you feel.

Is stress management therapy conducted in person or online?

Stress management treatment at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does stress management therapy last?

For those with low amounts of anxiety and stress and simple goals, stress management therapy can be fewer than 12 sessions. However, for those with intense anxiety and more severe symptoms, therapy will likely last longer in order to effectively treat their stress and mitigate their symptoms.

Need more help deciding?

You’re on a running streak for bad luck. All week, it’s been one thing after another: this morning, you stepped on a thumbtack as soon as you got out of bed. Then, you burnt your tongue on your coffee, got held up by road work, showed up late to work, and were just told to take over a stressful assignment.

Stressed is an understatement. You can feel yourself losing it mentally, emotionally, even physically. And you don’t know what to do. What are your options? How can you get a handle on the stress that’s stopping you from living a happy life?

If you are in the Milford, CT area, you can learn to better manage and cope with stress by working with a stress therapist at Thriveworks Counseling in New Haven. These therapists are experts on stress. They know how to help you manage the negative side effects that you might be experiencing from current stress and they can equip you with the tools to cope well with future stressors. What Is Stress? Why Is It Necessary?

None of us enjoy being stressed, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t necessary. Stress is our response to perceived threats. In this day and age, threats include traffic, arguments with our loved ones, a heavy workload, even busy places. These vary from person to person, but many do experience stress as a result of the above at least once in their lifetime. How we react, though, makes all the difference.

For example, imagine that you are sitting in traffic. Your heart races and your breath quickens as you think about how late you’re going to be for work. You pound your fist down on the steering wheel and scream, “Get down the road, idiots!” Now, let’s rewind to the beginning. Instead of ruminating over how late you’re going to be because of the traffic, you remind yourself that there’s nothing you can do about the traffic. You take a few deep breaths and plan how you will make up the lost time when you get to work.

In the first example, you exhibit poor stress management. Your angry outburst does not help your situation. In the second example, however, you exhibited great stress management skills. You were able to control any upsetting emotions and also spend your time wisely. Your mental, emotional, and physical health will directly benefit.

Do I Need Stress Management?

If you struggle to control yourself in stressful situations, and you are experiencing harmful effects as a result, such as…

  • Sleep disturbances
  • Physical illness
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Anxiety or depression

…then you can likely benefit from working with a stress therapist to better manage stress. Don’t worry, most people struggle to manage and cope with stress! And we can all benefit from adopting skills that help us improve our ability to do so. So, if you are in Milford, CT or the surrounding area, reach out to Thriveworks Counseling to set up your first stress therapy appointment. We’re ready to help you live better. Are you?

Gina is an incredibly skilled and talented clinician. She has the unique gift of making clients immediately feel safe and understood even upon first meeting. Her passion for the work is palpable. Her knowledge is vast and her approach is sensitive, gentle, supportive and compassionate, yet direct. Gina helped me navigate a tremendously challenging time in my life and afforded me the confidence to pursue personal goals that had initially felt unattainable. She taught me tangible skills to navigate anxiety and feelings of overwhelm during our work together and our sessions were always insightful and productive. Gina will lead you on a path to self discovery without all of the therapy lingo and jargon and will always help you to feel as though you’re the expert on your own life- because you are. I couldn’t recommend Gina more. A true diamond in the rough!
