What is your go-to approach for cognitive behavioral therapy?

My go-to-approach for helping people in cognitive behavioral therapy is to first understand the way our thinking controls our feelings and behaviors. I find the best benefit in developing skills to manage the negative thoughts because the client learns tools that they can use in their everyday life.

What tools do you teach in cognitive behavioral therapy?

Education on cognitive distortions, recognizing triggers, automatic thoughts, recognizing that thoughts are not facts and developing coping skills to to use in life.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in cognitive behavioral therapy?

I know a client is making progress when they are able to recognize the negative thoughts, they can begin to view themselves differently and see hope that things can be different.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement cognitive behavioral therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in cognitive behavioral therapy by completing worksheets provided by therapist and practice the things they are using. They can also celebrate every small win they have.

What should someone do to prepare for starting cognitive behavioral therapy?

To begin to prepare for cognitive behavioral therapy an individual can notice some of the negative thoughts or messages they give themselves so they can express them in their session.

Thriveworks helped me realize that I do believe people can change. I’m not the person I was three months ago, broken and fearful. I’m healthy and happy and for the first time being kind to myself. Thank you for giving me my life back.
