What is your go-to approach for individual therapy?

Bianca : My approach to individual therapy involves creating a safe and nonjudgmental space where clients can explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. I typically use a combination of techniques tailored to the individual's needs, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based approaches, and psychodynamic techniques. Building a strong therapeutic alliance and collaborating with clients to set goals is also a key aspect of my approach.

Ricky: My go-to approach for helping people in individual therapy is a combination of person-centered therapy and existential therapy. I find that using a combination of the two approaches helps create the motivation for the client to make changes.

What tools do you teach in individual therapy?

Bianca : In individual therapy, I teach a variety of tools and techniques to help clients cope with challenges and improve their mental well-being. Some common tools include:

  • Cognitive behavioral techniques: Helping clients identify and challenge negative thought patterns and beliefs, and replace them with healthier ones.
  • Mindfulness and relaxation techniques: Teaching clients how to cultivate present-moment awareness, reduce stress, and manage difficult emotions through practices such as deep breathing, meditation, and progressive muscle relaxation.
  • Communication skills: Assisting clients in improving their assertiveness, active listening, and conflict resolution skills to enhance their relationships and navigate interpersonal challenges more effectively.
  • Stress management strategies: Providing clients with practical skills and tools to cope with stressors, such as time management techniques, setting boundaries, and engaging in self-care activities.
  • Problem-solving skills: Guiding clients through the process of identifying and breaking down problems into manageable steps, brainstorming potential solutions, and implementing effective strategies to achieve their goals.
  • Emotion regulation techniques: Helping clients develop awareness of their emotions, identify triggers, and learn healthy ways to express and regulate their feelings.
These are just a few examples, and the specific tools taught in therapy depend on the individual client's needs and goals.

Ricky: I teach the following tools in individual therapy: self-care, proper boundaries, breathing techniques, and understanding your emotions.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy?

Bianca : I know a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy through various indicators, including:

  • Increased self-awareness: Clients may demonstrate a deeper understanding of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, as well as the underlying factors influencing them.
  • Improved coping skills: Clients may exhibit enhanced ability to manage stress, regulate emotions, and navigate challenges more effectively using the tools and techniques learned in therapy.
  • Positive changes in behavior: Clients may begin to implement healthier habits, engage in activities they enjoy, and make constructive choices that align with their goals and values.
  • Better interpersonal relationships: Clients may report improvements in their relationships with others, such as enhanced communication, greater empathy, and more satisfying interactions.
  • Reduced symptoms: Clients may experience a decrease in the severity and frequency of symptoms related to their mental health concerns, such as anxiety, depression, or trauma-related symptoms.
  • Increased motivation and resilience: Clients may demonstrate greater motivation to make changes in their lives, as well as improve their ability to bounce back from setbacks and persevere in the face of challenges.
Regular assessment and feedback from the client, as well as ongoing collaboration between the client, are essential for monitoring progress and adjusting the treatment plan as needed to ensure continued growth and improvement.

Ricky: I know a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy when a client consistently shows fewer negative or destructive thoughts and when certain goals are met.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement individual therapy?

Bianca : Clients can engage in several activities outside of therapy to supplement their progress and enhance their overall well-being:

  • Practice mindfulness and relaxation techniques: Incorporate mindfulness meditation, deep breathing exercises, or progressive muscle relaxation into daily routines to reduce stress and promote emotional balance.
  • Keep a journal: Spend some time each day reflecting on thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a journal. This can help increase self-awareness and provide valuable insights to discuss in therapy sessions.
  • Implement coping strategies: Practice coping skills learned in therapy, such as assertive communication, problem-solving techniques, or positive self-talk, to manage stressors and navigate challenging situations more effectively.
  • Engage in self-care activities: Prioritize self-care by participating in activities that promote physical, emotional, and mental well-being, such as exercise, hobbies, spending time with loved ones, or getting adequate rest.
  • Educate oneself: Read books, articles, or online resources related to personal growth, mental health, and topics discussed in therapy to gain a deeper understanding and perspective.
  • Connect with support networks: Seek support from friends, family members, support groups, or online communities to share experiences, gain encouragement, and build connections with others going through similar challenges.
  • Set and work towards goals: Identify specific goals and take small, manageable steps towards achieving them. Celebrate progress and setbacks as learning opportunities along the way.
By actively engaging in these activities and integrating the skills and insights gained from therapy into their daily lives, you can maximize the benefits of therapy and foster long-term growth and well-being.

Ricky: Clients can supplement their time in individual therapy with relaxation (in some mindful form), proper sleep, and physical activity.

What should someone do to prepare for starting individual therapy?

Bianca : Preparing for individual therapy can help set the stage for a positive and productive experience. Here are some steps you can take before starting therapy:

  • Clarify goals: Take some time to reflect on what you hope to achieve through therapy. Identify specific goals or areas of focus you would like to address, whether it's managing stress, improving relationships, or coping with difficult emotions.
  • Research therapists: Explore different therapists or counseling services to find a good fit for your needs and preferences. Consider factors such as therapeutic approach, expertise, location, availability, and cost.
  • Gather information: Collect any relevant information or documents that may be helpful for your therapist to have, such as medical history, previous therapy records, or information about current medications.
  • Prepare questions: Write down any questions or concerns you have about the therapy process, confidentiality, fees, or anything else you'd like to discuss with your therapist during the initial session.
  • Manage logistics: Arrange practical details such as scheduling appointments, familiarizing yourself with the location of the therapist's office, and determining payment or insurance arrangements.
  • Cultivate openness: Approach therapy with an open mind and willingness to engage in self-exploration and personal growth. Be prepared to discuss your thoughts, feelings, and experiences openly and honestly with your therapist.
  • Establish support systems: Identify sources of support outside of therapy, such as friends, family members, or support groups, to lean on during challenging times and between therapy sessions.
Taking these proactive steps can help you feel more prepared and empowered as you begin their therapeutic journey.

Ricky: To prepare for your first individual therapy session, you can try not to worry about what to say and be completely honest with your therapist.

Starting Individual therapy

What is individual therapy?

Individual therapy, also known as Individual therapy, allows people to engage in private sessions with a skilled therapist, counselor, or psychologist. The core objective of individual therapy is to establish a secure and confidential setting where you can openly discuss whatever emotional, psychological, or behavioral challenges you face. Through these one-on-one sessions, the client and therapist work together to delve into, comprehend, and ultimately find solutions for the issues at hand in their life.

How does individual therapy work?

Individual therapy unfolds in a structured process, commencing with an initial assessment in which the therapist gathers essential information about your history, concerns, and objectives. Together, you and your therapist collaboratively establish specific, attainable goals for your sessions, which can encompass symptom alleviation, personal development, or finding solutions to particular challenges.

Honestly, I don't think often about Thriveworks — but that's probably a good thing. I looked for and found Rachel through the EMDRIA site, and it's Rachel that I would recommend to friends, not Thriveworks. She is a fantastic therapist who has significantly affected my life.. . I appreciate how streamlined and simple you make it for Rachel and me to connect and maintain our therapeutic relationship. That is a huge feat that goes unsung and unrecognized except when things go haywire. Thank you for all that you do! That's why I gave you a 10 in the first question, even though I would never likely recommend the brand to a friend.
