What is your go-to approach for child therapy?

Ricky: Generally, a therapist will incorporate play therapy techniques. Play therapy allows children to express themselves safely and naturally, using toys, games, and creative activities to communicate their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. It helps build rapport, fosters trust, and enables children to explore and process their emotions at their own pace. Additionally, most therapists will use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and narrative therapy to help children understand their thoughts and behaviors, reframe negative beliefs, and develop coping skills.

Melanie: Child therapy offers numerous benefits for young clients, helping them navigate various challenges and promoting their overall well-being. Some of the key benefits include:

  • Emotional regulation: Therapy helps children understand and manage their emotions more effectively, which can improve their overall mood and ability to cope with stress.
  • Behavior management: Through therapy, children can learn strategies to manage challenging behaviors and develop healthier ways to express themselves.
  • Improved communication: Child therapy teaches children how to express their thoughts and feelings more clearly and openly, which can enhance their relationships with family, friends, and others.
  • Enhanced self-esteem: As children work through challenges in therapy, they often develop a stronger sense of self-worth and confidence.
  • Better relationships: Therapy can help children improve their relationships with family members, peers, and teachers by teaching them how to interact more positively and resolve conflicts.
  • Coping skills: Children learn coping strategies for dealing with various stressors such as anxiety, depression, or trauma, which can help them navigate life's challenges more effectively.
  • Trauma resolution: For children who have experienced trauma, therapy can provide a safe space to process their experiences and begin healing.
  • Improved academic performance: When emotional or behavioral challenges are addressed in therapy, children may experience improvements in focus, attention, and academic achievement.
  • Support for families: Child therapy often involves family members providing support and guidance to parents and caregivers to better understand and support their child's needs.
  • Long-term mental health: Early intervention through therapy can help prevent the development of more serious mental health issues later in life by addressing problems as they arise.
Overall, child therapy creates a supportive environment where children can grow and develop the skills they need to thrive emotionally, socially, and academically.

What tools do you teach in child therapy?

Ricky: Teaching tools and techniques tailored to each child's needs can be highly effective in child therapy. Some of the tools therapists commonly teach include:

  • Emotion identification: Helping children recognize and label their emotions using tools like emotion cards and emotion wheels.
  • Breathing exercises: Teaching simple breathing exercises, such as belly breathing or square breathing, to help children manage stress and anxiety.
  • Mindfulness: Mindfulness activities like guided meditation, body scans, or mindful coloring help children develop present-moment awareness and emotional regulation skills.
  • Coping skills: Teaching age-appropriate coping skills such as positive self-talk, grounding techniques, or using sensory tools like stress balls or fidget toys.
  • Problem-solving skills: Guiding children through problem-solving strategies such as breaking problems into smaller steps, brainstorming solutions, and evaluating outcomes.
  • Social skills training: Using role-playing or social stories to teach children important social skills like making friends, resolving conflicts, and communicating effectively.
  • Art and expressive therapies: Incorporating art therapy techniques, such as drawing, painting, or storytelling, to help children express themselves when words are difficult.
  • Relaxation techniques: Introducing relaxation techniques like progressive muscle relaxation, guided imagery, or visualization exercises to help children relax their bodies and minds.
  • Behavioral strategies: Implementing behavior management techniques, such as token systems, reward charts, or behavior contracts, to encourage positive behaviors and discourage negative ones.
  • Parental involvement: Involving parents in therapy sessions and providing them with tools and strategies to support their child's emotional and behavioral development at home.

Melanie: Children can learn a variety of useful tools and strategies in therapy to help them cope with challenges and navigate their emotions and behaviors. Therapy tools can vary depending on the child's age, developmental level, and specific needs, but common tools can include mindfulness, social skills training, journaling, problem-solving, behavior management, and emotional regulation. By learning these tools in therapy, children can develop resilience, self-awareness, and a stronger foundation for handling life's challenges.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in child therapy?

Ricky: Improved emotional regulation, increased self-awareness, enhanced coping skills, better social interactions, positive changes in behavior, greater confidence and self-esteem, improved relationships, and positive feedback from parents indicate meaningful progress in child therapy.

Melanie: Each child's journey is unique and may progress at different rates. However, there are several key signs that can indicate a child is making progress in therapy:

  • Better control over emotions and reactions. This can be shown through better behavior at home and school and improved relationships with the adults in a child's life, as well as their family and friends.
  • More open and appropriate communication about their thoughts and feelings.
  • Improved academic performance through improved focus, organization, and behavior.
  • Reduced anxiety or depression: Lessening of anxiety or depressive symptoms.
  • Better coping skills: Use of healthier strategies to manage stress and challenges.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement child therapy?

Ricky: Clients can enhance their progress in child therapy by engaging in various activities outside of sessions. These include practicing coping skills, participating in creative outlets and physical exercise, maintaining healthy habits, journaling, and practicing mindfulness.

Melanie: Adults can supplement their child's time in therapy by engaging with the therapist to continue reinforcing the skills they are learning and being engaged and supportive of the changes their child is making.

What should someone do to prepare for starting child therapy?

Ricky: To prepare for their first child therapy session, a child can:

  • Expressing feelings: Reflecting on their feelings and thoughts about therapy and any concerns they may have.
  • Setting goals: Thinking about what they hope to achieve in therapy and any specific challenges they want to address.
  • Questions for the therapist: Write down any questions or concerns they have about therapy, the therapist, or the process.
  • Favorite activities: Identifying favorite activities or hobbies that they enjoy and may want to incorporate into therapy sessions.
  • Comfort items: Bring comfort items such as a favorite toy, blanket, or stuffed animal to help them feel more at ease during the session.
  • Openness to communication: Being open to sharing their thoughts, feelings, and experiences with the therapist in a safe and supportive environment.

Melanie: Depending on the child's age, preparation for the first session could be as simple as explaining what the child should expect and answering their questions as honestly as possible. Younger children may benefit from a storybook about going to therapy. Older children may benefit from an honest conversation with their parent/guardian about the reasons for seeking therapy.

Starting Child therapy

What is child therapy?

Child therapy, also known as counseling for kids, helps young individuals better understand and manage the challenges that affect their mental health. Common challenges amongst kids include behavioral issues, trauma, bullying, depression, and anxiety. All ages of children can attend and benefit from child therapy at Thriveworks Jacksonville.

How does child therapy work?

Child therapy works by using multiple techniques tailored to fit the child’s needs based on their age group, their challenges, and the severity of their challenges. It might involve play therapy for younger kids or cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, art therapy, and others for varying ages. In any case, Thriveworks child therapists in Jacksonville, FL have the expertise and experience to help kids at their level.

Play therapy vs. child therapy

Child therapy is a type of therapy meant for clients within a specific age group, while play therapy is an approach to therapy that helps children with self-expression and stress relief, among others. Play therapy is a technique that is often used in child therapy to help children express what’s running through their minds when they do not have the words to express their thoughts and emotions. It can get children to express what’s wrong, what might be causing unwanted behaviors, or what they might need in a way that is accessible to them so that therapists can then work to treat the issue.

How to tell if my child needs counseling

It’s not always obvious when a child should see a therapist for their behavior, though in the midst of challenges like divorce, loss, bullying, and other mental health conditions, it’s often a good idea to seek it out. Common behaviors that can indicate a need for child therapy include separation anxiety, bedwetting (at inappropriate ages), and agitation/excessive irritability — especially if it reaches a point of physical violence.

What type of therapy is best for children?

Cognitive behavioral therapy at Thriveworks in Jacksonville, FL is one of the best types of therapy for children. However, it can be administered in child therapy sessions in a variety of ways that are more accessible to young minds, such as play therapy.

Is child therapy conducted in person or online?

Child therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does child therapy last?

The length of child therapy depends on your child’s needs as well as the goals that you and their therapist might have for them. Generally, child therapy sessions will last for several months.

How much does child therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we take most major forms of insurance, which means that many of our clients only pay a $0-$50 co-pay per session. However, there are also self-pay options that sit around $200 per session, depending on the service and location, for those who are out-of-network.

Need more help deciding?

Frederick Douglas once stated, “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.” Mental health begins in childhood, with meeting developmental milestones, learning to make friends, and building the capacity to focus and learn. When children encounter obstacles at any stage, caregivers can intervene and try to find them professional support. Child therapy is a way to give kids ages 1-17 the resources they need to grow up strong and confident in their abilities.

Child therapy at Thriveworks in Jacksonville, FL is a safe, compassionate environment that can teach children coping skills, support them through trauma and mental health crises, and address developmental or behavioral problems. Through counseling, neurodiverse kids can find ways to capitalize on their strengths and find better strategies for school success. Adolescents can get help for learning disorders, attention issues, or anxiety. Teenagers can get insights into difficult emotions they’re experiencing at home, school, or in their social life. And through therapy, parents and caregivers can learn how they can assist their young children at home.

Childhood can be a complex, difficult time. Thriveworks child therapists and counselors are specially trained and licensed to support childrens’ developmental, behavioral, emotional, and academic needs. Whether a teenager needs to talk to someone about bullying or a toddler with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) needs early intervention for communication challenges, the exceptional mental health professionals at Thriveworks can help.

When Should a Child See a Therapist?

There are a number of noticeable–and some not so noticeable–signs that your child might be experiencing mental health issues. Young children and adolescents, toddlers and teenagers, they all may manifest their difficulties in different ways. A child’s behavior at home or school could be a sign that something is amiss. Or your child might exhibit new feelings and behaviors at home that you think could be cause for concern. These may include the following:

  • Appetite changes and weight loss or gain
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Unwarranted aggression
  • Severe anxiety
  • Isolation
  • Alcohol or drug use
  • Self-harm
  • Expression of suicidal thoughts
  • Repetitive behaviors
  • Body image issues
  • Low energy
  • Intense irritability
  • Inexplicable stomach-aches or headaches

You can also be especially attentive to your child’s mental health if they’re experiencing a major transition or trauma, such as the loss of a loved one, a parental divorce, bullying, or another adverse childhood event (ACE).

What Happens in Child Therapy Sessions?

Child and family therapists at Thriveworks in Jacksonville, FL can specialize in different types of therapy. Often these therapies include the following approaches:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Play therapy
  • Music therapy
  • Art therapy
  • Child-parent relationship therapy
  • Behavioral therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Emotionally-focused therapy
  • Child trauma therapy
  • Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT)

Especially for young children, child therapy is essentially family therapy because primary caregivers and family members need to be involved in the treatment process. Parents can learn evidence-based practices to help their children by reinforcing what they learn in therapy.

How Do You Choose the Right Child Therapist?

The right child and adolescent therapist needs to be someone who can best help your child, no matter what they’re dealing with. If your child is having focus or learning difficulties at school, they might benefit from seeing a child psychologist who specializes in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). If your child is suffering from an eating disorder, then you should seek out a therapist with experience in that mental health issue.

You also need to consider whether the provider is qualified in clinical child adolescent psychology. (All Thriveworks mental health providers are fully licensed and recruited from the top 4 percent of applicants.) Lastly, can you afford regular therapy sessions? (Thriveworks providers accept most major forms of health insurance and offer affordable self-pay rates.)

I’ve been dealing with a few stressers before reaching out for help in the psychology space. I reached out mainly because the pain being caused in my relationship. Sarah welcomed me into her network here with such professionalism I felt instantly comfortable with having open and candid conversation. Since then my life has gone through and still going through major changes some good and some bad. I would like Thriveworks and Sarah know that this couldn’t have been a better time for someone like Sarah to open her door for me and coach me through some of things I’ve been going thru and point me in the right direction of how to be the best version of a person I can be. You can tell she is passionate about her work and cares deeply for clients like myself. If there’s ever a time where someone I know needs to talk to someone I will recommend Thriveworks and specifically Sarah if it’s possible. Sarah, keep up the good work. You’re making a positive difference in my life.
