What is your go-to approach for cognitive behavioral therapy?

In cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), my go-to approach involves collaborating with clients to identify and challenge unhelpful thought patterns and beliefs that contribute to distressing emotions and behaviors. Together, we work to develop practical strategies and skills to replace these patterns with more adaptive and constructive ways of thinking and responding. This often includes setting specific, achievable goals, learning problem-solving techniques, and engaging in behavioral experiments to test and refine new ways of approaching situations. Additionally, I emphasize the importance of mindfulness and self-compassion to foster greater awareness and acceptance of thoughts and emotions, while also encouraging clients to actively engage in activities that promote their well-being and reinforce positive changes.

What tools do you teach in cognitive behavioral therapy?

In cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), I teach clients a variety of tools and techniques to help them identify and change unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors. Some common tools include:

  • Cognitive restructuring: Helping clients identify and challenge distorted or negative thoughts, and replace them with more balanced and realistic ones.
  • Behavioral activation: Encouraging clients to engage in activities that bring them a sense of pleasure, accomplishment, or mastery to counteract feelings of depression or low mood.
  • Relaxation techniques: Teaching clients relaxation exercises such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, or guided imagery to reduce anxiety and promote emotional regulation.
  • Exposure therapy: Gradually exposing clients to feared or avoided situations in a safe and controlled manner to help them overcome anxiety or phobias.
  • Problem-solving skills: Assisting clients in breaking down problems into manageable steps, generating potential solutions, and evaluating their effectiveness in addressing the problem.
  • Activity scheduling: Helping clients organize their time and schedule enjoyable and meaningful activities to increase feelings of satisfaction and fulfillment.
  • Assertiveness training: Teaching clients how to express their needs, thoughts, and feelings in a clear and respectful manner, and assert their rights in interpersonal situations.
These tools are tailored to each client's specific needs and goals and are designed to empower them to become their own agents of change in managing their mental health and well-being.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in cognitive behavioral therapy?

Meaningful progress in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is often evident when clients demonstrate increased awareness and mastery of the skills and techniques taught in therapy. This can include a noticeable reduction in distressing symptoms such as anxiety or depression, as well as improvements in functioning and quality of life. Clients may also exhibit greater flexibility in their thinking and behavior, demonstrating a capacity to challenge and change unhelpful thought patterns and engage in healthier coping strategies. Additionally, progress is often reflected in clients' ability to apply the skills learned in therapy to real-life situations, leading to more adaptive responses and a greater sense of empowerment and self-efficacy in managing their mental health.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement cognitive behavioral therapy?

Clients can supplement cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) by practicing thought monitoring through journaling, implementing coping strategies learned in therapy, conducting behavioral experiments to test new ways of thinking and behaving, gradually exposing themselves to feared situations or stimuli, setting and tracking goals, prioritizing self-care activities, and engaging in mindfulness practices to increase present-moment awareness. These efforts outside of therapy sessions help reinforce the skills and techniques learned in CBT, promoting continued progress and empowering clients to manage their mental health more effectively.

What should someone do to prepare for starting cognitive behavioral therapy?

To prepare for starting cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), someone can begin by clarifying their goals for therapy and identifying specific challenges or concerns they'd like to address. Researching potential therapists to find a good fit and gathering any relevant information or documents that may be helpful for the therapist to have can also be beneficial. It's important to approach therapy with an open mind and willingness to engage in self-reflection and change and establish support systems outside of therapy to lean on during challenging times. Taking these proactive steps can help individuals feel more prepared and empowered as they embark on their therapeutic journey.

Starting Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)

What is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)?

At Thriveworks, Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a widely recognized and evidence-based form of psychotherapy or talk therapy. It focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns, emotions, and behaviors that can contribute to various mental health issues or challenges that people are struggling with.

What does a cognitive behavioral therapist do?

Cognitive behavioral therapists specialize in Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and can help you to identify and comprehend your thought patterns, which often encompass automatic negative thoughts, cognitive distortions, and self-defeating beliefs. Once these negative thought patterns are pinpointed, cognitive behavioral therapists aim to challenge and replace them with the objective of fostering more constructive and logical thinking. In addition, these therapists place significant emphasis on implementing positive behavioral changes based on the newly established, healthier thought patterns.

What is CBT best for?

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is particularly effective for addressing conditions like anxiety disorders, depression, phobias, and obsessive-compulsive disorders. It focuses on identifying and modifying negative thought patterns and behaviors, making it well-suited for issues related to distorted thinking and emotional regulation.

How much does a CBT session cost?

At Thriveworks, we take most major forms of insurance, meaning many of our clients only pay a small $0-$50 co-pay. However, we have self-pay options, too. For those out-of-network, our therapy and psychiatry services are around $200, depending on the service and location.

What is the success rate of CBT?

The success rate of CBT varies depending on the intentions of the client and their condition(s).

What\'s better: CBT or DBT?

The selection between cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is based on an individual’s unique needs and challenges. CBT is commonly chosen for addressing conditions such as anxiety and depression, whereas DBT is especially beneficial for individuals dealing with borderline personality disorder, emotional regulation issues, and difficulties in interpersonal relationships.

Is CBT conducted in person or online?

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with our Thriveworks therapists in Jacksonville, FL is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How many sessions is CBT?

Generally, CBT is considered a short-term therapy, typically lasting for about 12 to 20 weekly sessions. In some cases, it might extend to around 16 to 20 sessions for more complex issues.

Their billing is horrible. I signed a payment agreement and they did not honour it. They charged my card for way more than the agreed amount making my account go negative. Cancelled all my appointment and wont be using this service again.

I’ve been dealing with a few stressers before reaching out for help in the psychology space. I reached out mainly because the pain being caused in my relationship. Sarah welcomed me into her network here with such professionalism I felt instantly comfortable with having open and candid conversation. Since then my life has gone through and still going through major changes some good and some bad. I would like Thriveworks and Sarah know that this couldn’t have been a better time for someone like Sarah to open her door for me and coach me through some of things I’ve been going thru and point me in the right direction of how to be the best version of a person I can be. You can tell she is passionate about her work and cares deeply for clients like myself. If there’s ever a time where someone I know needs to talk to someone I will recommend Thriveworks and specifically Sarah if it’s possible. Sarah, keep up the good work. You’re making a positive difference in my life.

I have been so well taken care of with Thriveworks! From the efficient sign-up process, to my outstanding therapist, Vanessa Cumber. Vanessa takes the time to really understand the big events in my life. She helps me reflect, review and challenge my own views about things, when I go to a negative place and get stuck there. Vanessa helps me get to the bottom of why I am so hard on myself. She is teaching me to become my own strongest advocate, instead of staying in my default, of harshest critic. Vanessa has the patience and fortitude of a Saint. I am truly blessed by her, and everyone at Thriveworks! You all are making the world a kinder place!
