What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

My go-to approach for treating depression is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). I prefer using CBT because it allows clients to understand the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

I teach the following tools in depression therapy:

  • Coping skills including meditation, breathing, journaling, and more to support symptom management and mood regulation.
  • The importance of creating structure in your day. We will discuss building routines around socialization to establish connection, physical activity, and hobbies and personal interests.
  • We learn how to embrace our emotions as neither good nor bad to minimize feelings of guilt and shame.
  • We learn to use empathy and compassion as the compass for our mental health journey.
  • We learn to reframe irrational fears, thoughts, and beliefs by challenging them using facts and positive collected evidence.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

I know a client is making progress in depression therapy when they begin to make meaningful emotional and behavioral changes that support the goal they came into treatment to address.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement depression counseling?

"Clients can supplement their time in depression therapy by:

  • Implementing coping skills throughout the day.
  • Establishing healthy routines.
  • Surrounding themselves with a support system that allows them to feel seen, heard, and validated.
"

What should someone do to prepare for starting depression counseling?

To prepare for your first depression counseling session, you can start by making a choice that you are worthy of investing in yourself and acknowledge how brave you are to take the first step in scheduling an appointment.

Talisha Harrison helped me by giving me the tools to help me navigate some difficult relationships. I also appreciate how kind, sensitive, and empathetic she was as I have been grieving a recent loss of a parent. I have also been recovering from a serious medical condition. Should I feel the need to seek counseling in the future, I would not hesitate to return to counseling with Talisha.
